SUMMARY:Webinar | The Future of Learning Technology: 10 Key Tools and Methods
DESCRIPTION:  \nAt the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic\, the education system in Canada and around the world received an unexpected shock as schools\, colleges and universities closed and people began working and learning from home. As faculty\, instructors\, students\, administrators\, policy-makers and funders\, we learned a lot. But what can we expect in the future? \nIn this webinar\, Contact North I Contact Nord Research Associate Stephen Downes discusses the 10 major educational technology tools\, methods and developments that are expected to be more widely adopted within two to three years and will likely be mainstream by 2030. \nKey takeaways\nYou’ll come away from this engaging and interactive webinar with an understanding of the following: \n1.    Why the web of data is the most significant long-term transformation in knowledge and learning\n2.    How virtualization will remove computing from devices\n3.    What the application of graph theory will look like for post-secondary institutions\n4.    How decentralized resource networks will help institutions look at emerging pedagogies\n5.    Building and managing consensus-based community with a variety of distributed technologies\n6.    How online identity is created and managed\n7.    The importance of combining content and creativity\n8.    How institutions will recognize learning by job offers and not degrees or diplomas\n9.    How education institutions will emphasize and promote individual agency\n10.  What technologies will be used to meet people where they are\, whether that’s at home\, the community centre\, school or the workplace

SUMMARY:Artificial Intelligence: Expanding the impact and access of healthcare worldwide
DESCRIPTION:Since 1957 the idea of artificial intelligence (AI) has moved from myth to reality\, and as we progress into the future\, AI will increase its stronghold in our society. While the advances of this technology are exciting to some\, others are fearful. A recent study found that nearly 69% of college graduates believe AI could take their jobs in a few years\, and with the CheXNet deep learning software being able to read a chest Xray with a higher accuracy than a medically trained professional\, the fear may be validated. \n  \nIn this session we will begin to pull back the curtain on AI. We’ll discuss the history of AI\, and the three main types of artificial intelligence while focusing in on how AI is specifically used in medicine. We will also share insight on an AI application that has some radiologists worried for their job security\, and discuss how some of these fears are unfounded.

SUMMARY:Developing Virtual Standardized Patients for Health Sciences Education using Natural Language Dialogue Systems
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will summarize our work on creating conversational virtual standardized patients for medical education. Our Virtual Standardized Patients are avatar representations of human patients which are controlled by artificial intelligence software. Students can converse using natural language\, practice their history taking skills and receive immediate feedback on their interaction. Students can interview the Virtual Patients via a web site\, on their iPads\, or using a Virtual Reality headset in which the students are virtually in the room with their patients to enhance the authenticity and realism of the experience. We have Virtual Standardized Patients with a variety of chief complaints including back pain\, abdominal pain\, headache\, dizziness\, shortness of breath\, dysuria\, and sadness. We are currently working on a patient with Opioid Use Disorder\, a patient with Limited English Proficiency\, and a Virtual Cancer Patient for health care providers to practice difficult conversations. \nDouglas Danforth is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He has been involved in Virtual Patient and Virtual Reality research for over 15 years. His lab is funded by the Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration\, The Ohio Department of Medicaid\, The Institute for Innovative Technologies in Medial Education\, The Agency for Health Care Research and Quality\, and The National Science Foundation.

SUMMARY:The Prosthetic 3D Printing Revolution
DESCRIPTION:The e-NABLE Community is an amazing group of individuals from all over the world who come together and collaborate on ways to help improve the open-source 3D printable designs for hands and arms for those who were born missing fingers or who have lost them due to war\, disease or natural disaster. As of November 2019\, there have been approximately 7\,000 3D printed hands and arms created and gifted to children and adults in need in over 100 countries around the world. There are an estimated 30\,000 e-NABLE Volunteers (including students and teachers) who are helping to make a difference in their local communities\, clinics\, and schools all across the globe. \n  \nIn this session we will review the history of the e-NABLE Community\, and how some scrap metal and a 5-year old South African boy named Liam\, born with missing fingers due to Amniotic Band Syndrome\, made a difference to change the world for the better. We will focus on the required elements and techniques needed to begin the creation of 3D prosthetic printing. This includes scanning and measuring techniques\, adding style and colors\, and designing based on existing abilities when considering the difficulty in print and assembly of designs. We will also discuss bionics (robotic hands)\, specialty adaptors (bike handlebar\, guitar pick)\, and animal prosthetics. \n  \nIndividuals who might be interested in joining the Prosthetic 3D Printing Revolution are encouraged to attend\, as we hope to continue the conversation and create a WesternU team to help “e-NABLE the future” and expand upon this generous community.

SUMMARY:Creating Immersive Experiences Using 360° Technology
DESCRIPTION:In today’s age of educational tools and resources\, instructors have a myriad of tools to choose from. Leveraging any one of these to ensure student success can be daunting. \n360° technology\, has the potential of impacting student outcomes in a rich way without necessarily relying on specialized gear. \nThe benefits of immersive learning include: creating a realistic\, yet safe\, space for the learner; contextualizing the lesson by placing the learner in a specific environment; allowing the learner to personalize\, identify\, and empathize with the subject matter; all while engaging multiple senses. \nPlease join Sunami Chun\, Manager\, EdTech Innovations and Joe Marilo\, Senior Instructional Media Producer\, as they take you on a round trip tour in immersive technology; discuss production considerations; go over workflow and design strategies. \nLearning Objectives: \n1. Identify opportunities to use this technology\n2. Learn how easy and convenient this technology has become (how to use Insta One X2 and WARP 360 editing platform).
