SUMMARY:3 Questions to Consider in Student-Centered Remote Teaching
DESCRIPTION:While online and remote education may not be equal\, today’s new remote educators can work toward providing high-quality\, engaging learning experiences for their students. Providing access to content is a great first step\, but access on its own does not make for a quality learning experience.  During this session we will review the EDUCAUSE article Student-Centered Remote Teaching: Lessons Learned from Online Education.  The session will cover the Three Questions to Consider in Student-Centered Remote Teaching. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nList the three questions that should be considered when developing a student-centered approach to remote teaching\nDiscuss examples of student-centered interactions for remote teaching and learning\nCollaborate with peers on shared experiences of student-to-student interaction for remote learning\nIdentify examples of how to facilitate student-to-instructor interaction

SUMMARY:Creating and Facilitating a Virtual Poster Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Recent prohibition of large group meetings has impacted all of us in academia causing the cancellation of conferences\, symposia\, college- and department-level faculty and staff meetings\, etc. These current restraints have prompted us to think outside the box when it comes to the standards related to Scientific Poster Presentations. \nAs an IPE student at the COMP-NW campus\, the final activity is an in-person scientific poster display presentation.  This is a group assignment in which 252 students from 4 colleges are organized into 28 different groups\, and given a recent public health topic to research and present in poster-form.  As you can imagine\, social-distancing has caused us to rethink how this activity can be completed given our new proximity constraints. \nIn an effort to maintain the project requirements\, given our current social-distancing circumstances\, CETL has developed a Virtual Poster Presentation forum.  During this session we will discuss the process of how this idea went from design to concept to creation.  Come see a real-world hot-off-the-presses implementation and hear about how it was done and lessons learned. \nAfter attending this session\, participants will be able to: \n\n Describe how website and video conferencing technologies can be utilized  to  present student work to a wide audience.\nIdentify some of the advantages of a virtual setting and some of its pitfalls.\nEngage WesternU IT and CETL staffs to create their own virtual poster presentation.

SUMMARY:Development of a Branched E-Learning Simulation for Schizophrenia Therapeutics
DESCRIPTION:Electronic learning (e-learning) is gaining popularity due to technology trends\, learner preferences\, and evident need for curricula to be able to adapt to changing world conditions. Passive e-learning methods such as recorded Zoom lectures can be used in an emergency\, although are far from ideal e-learning tools. \nInteractivity in e-learning exercises changes the level of engagement students have with e-learning materials\, which in turn can influence learning. In this session we describe the instructional design process of developing a branched e-learning interactive simulation for schizophrenia therapeutics and summarize course evaluation feedback pertinent to the branched e-learning simulation. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDifferentiate types of e-learning based upon levels of interactivity including basic (passive)\, intermediate (limited interactivity)\, and complex (branched simulations)\nDescribe instructional design process of branched e-learning simulation\nSummarize course evaluation feedback pertinent to the branched e-learning simulation

SUMMARY:Webinar - How to Use Data to Put Learners First
DESCRIPTION:Institutional reports often highlight lagging indicators like pass rates or completion rates\, data that shows what happened after an event took place. Often this information arrives too late for institutional stakeholders to intervene effectively. In this webinar\, we will explore different ways higher education institutions are using their learning management system data to optimize student success and institutional effectiveness before it’s too late to make a difference. We will explore what data is important to supporting institutional success initiatives and how LMS data can be used to bolster and reinforce continuous improvement efforts. \nLearning Outcomes: \n– Recognize ways learner data in the LMS can be used to support student      success/institutional effectiveness. \n– Reflect on how learner data is utilized within your own institution. \n– Share reflections with presenters and participants.

SUMMARY:InteresTED: Let's Use Video to Reinvent Education - Flipping the Classroom with Khan Academy
DESCRIPTION:In this TED Talk\, Salman Khan talks about how and why he created the remarkable Khan Academy. He shows the power of interactive exercises\, and calls for teachers to consider flipping the traditional classroom script — give students video lectures to watch at home\, and do “homework” in the classroom with the teacher available to help. \nDuring this session we will view the popular TED Talk presented by Sal Khan\, discuss the flipped learning model and how videos can be used to support student education. \n

SUMMARY:Webinar - How To Tame High Cognitive Load In eLearning
DESCRIPTION:Did you ever experience “firehose training?” That’s when learners are flooded with content\, without regard for how they perceive\, process and retain it. Information overload is a significant hindrance to effective learning and retention. But\, can we do anything about it? Fortunately\, we can. Over the decades\, cognitive load theory has been researched and refined. We now know there are ways to reduce high cognitive load. \nPlease join UCI Division of Continuing Education in welcoming Connie Malamed (a.k.a. The eLearning Coach) to explore a model of how we learn\, what high cognitive load really means\, and instructional strategies you can use to reduce high cognitive load.

SUMMARY:Webinar - Convert Classroom Training to Blended Learning using your Creativity & Adobe Technology
DESCRIPTION:Blended learning is a common buzz phrase in L&D\, and it’s one that deserves attention. You may even deliver the same course content in multiple delivery formats so learners can choose how they want to learn. \nMixing and matching many delivery formats\, including videos\, games\, virtual reality (VR) activities\, can help you as an L&D manager to create a learning environment that is engaging and cost-effective. \nJoin us for this interactive session with Katrina Marie Baker presenting ways to make developing and delivering blended learning programs easier\, using learning technology! \nKatrina Marie Baker will provide food for thought on the following points: \n\nBenefits of blended learning as they relate to the learner and organization\nA cost comparison of 100% instructor-led training (ILT) versus blended learning\nHow to incorporate classroom experiences with other types of course content to engage learners\nWays learning technology can add value and make it easier to develop and deliver blended learning\nUnderstand how the Fluidic player can help you leverage fully blended courses in your training programs

SUMMARY:Webinar | Universal Design for Learning: Creating Learning for All
DESCRIPTION:Schools and the workplace are filled with diverse learners. One-size-fits-all eLearning may not meet all learners’ needs. How can we design eLearning and our training materials to reduce barriers and meet the needs of all learners? Please join UCI Division of Continuing Education in welcoming Dr. Jean Marrapodi\, Senior Learning Architect for Illumina Interactive Learning\, as she presents Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and its set of principles for curriculum development that give all individuals equal opportunities to learn. \nYou will discover an educational framework based on research in the learning sciences (including cognitive neuroscience) that guides the development of flexible learning environments that can accommodate individual learning differences. \nAt the end of the session\, you will recognize changes that are needed in your design practices and be able to implement UDL paradigms moving forward. \n\n\n\nPresented by:\nUCI Division of Continuing Education
