SUMMARY:20 Minute Mentor: Using Authentic Assessment to Assess Student Learning
DESCRIPTION:This 20-minute mentor discusses authentic assessments that can best assess student learning. Assessment can be a scary word\, but it doesn’t have to be. Instead\, it should focus on letting faculty measure a student’s growth and how to tell if learning is taking place. Michael G. Strawser\, PhD\, Assistant Professor at the University of Central Florida discusses how he uses authentic assessments in their classroom. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nWhat is an authentic assessment?\nList and describe the key concepts and components of authentic assessment.\nExplain the importance of student-centered learning and how its relevant to course design and assessment.\nDiscuss the difficulties of implementing authentic assessment methods in teaching and learning\, considering their holistic and transformative nature and its benefits.

SUMMARY:From Theory to Practice: A DEI Course Design Rubric for Cultivating Inclusivity and Equity in Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:This CETL session draws upon the article “A DEI Course Design Rubric: Supporting Teaching and Learning in Uncertain Times” from EDUCAUSE. This session will discuss the importance of creating an inclusive learning environment in higher education. Presented is a tool for educators to assess and improve their course design to foster a more equitable and inclusive learning experience for all students. The rubric comprises five categories\, including institutional commitment\, course climate\, learning objectives and outcomes\, course content and materials\, and assessment and feedback. The article also provides practical examples and suggestions for each category\, highlighting the importance of intentional course design in supporting students from diverse backgrounds and promoting equity in higher education. \nLearning Objectives \n\nList and describe the ten principles of DEI Course Design Rubric\nDescribe how to implement the rubric in courses to improve any DEI components.\nList other DEI course design elements and how they can be incorporated in addition to the rubric presented.

SUMMARY:Webinar | How to Create Equitable Communities of Care in Online Learning
DESCRIPTION:Creating online learning experiences that promote care (referring to a sense of compassion\, empathy\, and consideration for the well-being of others) in an equitable manner requires heightened awareness of multiple dimensions of injustice\, intentional action and adaptation. These considerations are crucial for ensuring all students have the resources\, opportunities\, and support they need to succeed and thrive in a remote learning environment. \nDuring this interactive session\, we explore the concept of “Equitable Communities of Care” and how it applies to online education. We discuss the importance of addressing the needs of all students\, regardless of their background or circumstances\, and the role of emotional and social support in creating a safe and supportive learning environment. \nWe also introduce the “Equity-Care Matrix”\, a tool for analyzing and evaluating educational practices and systems in terms of their fairness and care. You learn how to apply the matrix to your online classes and institutions and identify areas that need improvement. \nWe also introduce the concept of “Intentionally Equitable Hospitality” as an approach to moving towards socially just care in online education. We sample some concrete ideas available in the curated community building resources on OneHE/Equity-Unbound  and discuss ways of adapting them to different contexts. \nBy the end of this webinar\, you have a deeper understanding of how to create educational experiences that are supportive\, inclusive\, and considerate of the needs and perspectives of all participants and have the tools to put this into practice. By promoting care in online learning\, educators can help students build strong relationships\, feel a sense of belonging\, and become more engaged in their education. \nKey Takeaways \nAs a result of attending this interactive and engaging webinar\, participants can:\n●    Apply the Equity-Care Matrix to analyze practices in their own context and institution.\n●    Consider ways to enhance equitable community building using the lens of Intentionally Equitable Hospitality as an approach to socially just care.\n●    Find suitable community building practices to use in online teaching and be ready to adapt them as needed. \nPresenter: Dr. Maha Bali\, PhD | Professor of Practice at the Center for Learning and Teaching at the American University\, Cairo

SUMMARY:Webinar | Embracing the Digital: Defining a New Strategic Approach to Learning
DESCRIPTION:Join online learning leaders from the Big Ten Academic Alliance institutions to learn what is needed to succeed in a post-pandemic higher education landscape. A Big Ten subgroup participated in a modified Delphi process to project long-term trends and identify three areas requiring attention from academic leaders: 1) addressing the increasing demand for online learning and shift in demographics by emphasizing an equitable and student-centered service model; 2) providing the infrastructure to support high-quality\, technology-enhanced learning driven by innovation; and 3) clearly articulating and delivering value to learners with an emphasis on flexible\, integrated offerings that align with workforce skills. This interactive session will offer concrete examples\, provide opportunities to informally assess your institution’s current state\, and equip you with a template to catalyze conversations at your own institution. \nOutcomes\n\nExplore the set of emerging higher education themes\, identified by a group of large public university online leaders\, that are relevant to all institutions pursuing technology-enhanced learning in the post-pandemic landscape\nEvaluate your organization’s success in relation to student services\, high-quality learning\, and delivering value to learners\nIdentify the stakeholders to engage in your organization to advance the conversation on academic innovation\n\nPresenters: Andrea Deau | Senior Director for Higher Education Programs | 1EdTech \nReba-anna Lee | Assistant Dean of Distance Learning School of Professional Studies | Northwestern University \nChris Foley | Associate Vice President & Director of Online Education | Indiana University

SUMMARY:Webinar | Content Creation Using AI: How AI Can Be Used to Build Courses and Learning Experiences
DESCRIPTION:A team in the US used ChatGPT to create a 19-module\, 36-hour long micro-credential in less than 20 hours. Their second course took half the time and the third half again. Content engines accelerated the creation of quality content. \nOthers are using AI to convert text-to-speech so presentations offered to students can have a soundtrack which in turn can be translated into one of 60 languages. Others are using the AI-enabled design features of video production suites to create much more engaging online presentations. AI is becoming a content creation partner to produce quality learning materials. \nKey Takeaways \nIn this engaging and interactive introduction to AI-enabled content creation\, you learn: \n•    Which AI resources are available that can help you quickly create quality content.\n•    What you should be cautious about and what we know are problems with AI-enabled content creation.\n•    How to leverage AI text-to-speech and speech-to-text for learning material creation.\n•    How to use the AI design features for a variety of material creation activities.\n•    How content curation is a major opportunity for AI-enabled supports\, especially for students with exceptionalities. \nThroughout the webinar\, we look at examples of current and emerging practice in AI-enabled content creation. \nHost: Dr. Stephen Murgatroyd\,Chief Innovation Officer\, Contact North | Contact Nord

SUMMARY:20 MM | What Are 7 Ways to Assess Students in an Ungraded Classroom?
DESCRIPTION:Come join this facilitated discussion as we watch a 20 Minute Mentor video session led by Emily Dosmar\, PhD. This session\, “What Are 7 Ways to Assess Students in an Ungraded Classroom?” builds upon the previous session on an Ungraded classroom. Ungrading is using assessments that seek to improve their content knowledge and skills rather than relying on a letter grade or percentage. Ungrading focuses on feedback\, performance and demonstrated growth to determine their achievement. If you missed the first CETL Session on Ungrading that is ok because watching the previous video is not mandatory and we will be sending out a link to the previous CETL session the day before so you may review it. \nThis session will review what ungrading is and how to assess students in an ungraded classroom with seven strategies for instructors to use in an ungraded classroom. \n  \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDescribe what ungrading is.\nDescribe how to use a gradebook when assessing students in an ungraded classroom.\nDiscuss how to best implement feedback for students.
