SUMMARY:Tell me about Neuroteach!
DESCRIPTION:A recap and discussion of the book by Glenn Whitman and Ian Kelleher \n  \nThere’s a new category of literature regarding teaching & learning\, it’s called Mind/Brain/Education or MBE. The book “Neuroteach: Brain Science and the Future of Education” describes this new evidence-informed genre. The book also discusses effective and not-so-effective teaching methods that leverage the body of knowledge regarding brain anatomy and physiology. Of particular interest to most educators is “The Top Twelve Research-Informed Strategies Every Teacher Should Be Doing with Every Student”. During this presentation\, we will recap the major points discussed in the book and review the Top 12 list. Come hear and discuss what the current research on teaching & learning and the brain tells us should be best practice in the classroom.

SUMMARY:Facilitator Development Series
DESCRIPTION:As competency-based education expands across the health professions the methods we use in the classroom also expand in order to promote active learning both inside and outside of the classroom. While we develop new learner skills through a competency-based approach we must also develop new faculty skills to meet the expanding needs for our students to attain competence. Both small group and large classroom teaching must adapt and expand how we teach and how we engage with learners. \n  \nIn this 8-week faculty development series\, we will explore various teaching techniques and facilitator skills that can be used in the classrooms\, laboratories\, simulations\, and in clinical practice sites. The series will progress through 8 sessions. Each session will last 1 hour and is broken down into a theory burst about a specific teaching technique or facilitator skill\, followed by a practice period. The session will end with a debrief along with making specific plans to use the technique/skill with learners. Sessions will occur every other Friday over the course of a semester. While there is a progression in the skills focused upon faculty are welcome to sign up and participate in any of the sessions. The series will run the length of the Fall semester and will be repeated again in the Spring semester. \n  \nThe first session is scheduled for Friday\, August 13\, from 3-4 PM via Zoom. Subsequent sessions are scheduled for the same time every other Friday. Faculty across both campuses and clinical sites are welcome to attend.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Partnerships in Instruction: Deepening Collaboration Among Instructional Support Staff\, Faculty and Students | Educause
DESCRIPTION:Teaching and learning is of critical importance to academic libraries as they seek to align themselves with the mission of their universities. To effectively support faculty in their teaching\, librarians and other instructional support staff need techniques and tools to foster collaboration. The demand for online instructional support during the pandemic affirmed the necessary role of libraries in assisting students and faculty. Join us to discuss how librarians might join forces with instructional support staff such as learning designers\, instructional technologists\, professional developers for centers of teaching and learning to enhance collaborative work with faculty and students. Questions we will explore together include: \n\nWhat are your challenges in supporting courses?\nHow can we enhance our collaboration to better support courses?\nWhat processes and relationships do we need for collaborative instructional support?\nWhat kind of professional development and/or workplace learning among staff and faculty might support these efforts?\n\nThe main audience for this QuickTalk is instructional librarians\, instructional technologists\, learning designers\, professional development staff (in centers of teaching and learning)\, and other instructional support staff who would like to collaborate to improve teaching and learning. \nFacilitated by:  John McCormick\, Associate Director of Learning Design | Brandeis University\, Waltham Massachusetts   \n                           Kathe Pelletier\, Director\, Teaching and Learning Program | Educause\, Washington\, District of Columbia \n

SUMMARY:Getting Started with Quality Matters
DESCRIPTION:Quality Matters began with a small group of Maryland colleagues who were trying to solve a common problem among institutions: how do we measure and guarantee the quality of a course? This question became important because many institutions were trying to create a system where they could share available seats in their online courses with other institutions. Because of this\, they worked to create courses of quality for their students\, regardless of where the course originated. In 2003\, the colleagues created the Quality Matters program\, which would create a scalable process for course quality assurance.  \nIn this session\, participants will be introduced to Quality Matters and how it can be helpful in effective course development. Participants will also look at some of the rubrics that are central to Quality Matters implementation.   \n  \n  \nSession Objectives:  \n\nProvide background and overview of Quality Matters  \nReview Quality Matters rubrics for higher education \nDescribe the benefits of using Quality Matters for course quality and development \n\n

SUMMARY:Connecting Educational Concepts with Mind Mapping Techniques
DESCRIPTION:Mind mapping is a technique used to visually outline information. By using words\, pictures and diagrams\, mind mapping can help professors teach connections in course material\, as well as help students study. \n  \nThe main concept\, or idea\, is at the center of the mind map. From the nucleus-center\, themes associated with the main concept branch out; and from each of these themes\, additional branches or twigs begin to grow as attributing information begins to unveil itself as a subset of the theme or idea. Mind mapping technique can help students visualize subject content and conceptually display how various ideas are interconnected. \n  \nIn this CETL Session we will: \n– explain the basic theory of mind mapping \n– identify how larger concepts can be broken down into smaller themes and ideas \n– list various educational technology tools to assist in the creation of a mind map \n– identify example mind maps used in medical education \n– apply new knowledge by creating a mind map \n
