SUMMARY:Webinar | The Dual Role of Faculty Advising in Faculty Leadership and Student Success: A Time for Discussion
DESCRIPTION:As Carol Moore notes in her article\, “Advising: Meeting Student Needs?”\, “only 22% of colleges have the advising function staffed by professional advisors.” At schools with professional advisors\, students often encounter a well-oiled machine of advising that transitions them from their first years of college with a general advisor to more focused work with a major-specific faculty member or advisor. Students at institutions without professional advisors need that same kind of support and guidance in navigating their academic careers\, and if they do not receive it\, they may struggle to retain at the institution. At the majority of institutions\, meanwhile\, undergraduate students are too often left with faculty advisors who are neither trained nor given the time to provide appropriate advising. \nJoin us for a one-hour facilitated discussion on the challenges of faculty advising and how to equip faculty with the skills to be successful advisors. You’ll have the opportunity to discuss how your institution prepares faculty for advising\, as well as what changes you’d need to make to incorporate advising as service into promotion and tenure portfolios. The author\, Carol Moore\, will be present to answer your questions and share her thoughts about the changes needed to ensure student success in today’s higher ed landscape. \nFacilitator:   Carol Moore. B.A.\, M.A. PhD

SUMMARY:Creating the professional biosketch that gets you noticed!
DESCRIPTION:The needs for a healthcare professional to have a current biosketch are many. Conference planners review biosketches when selecting speakers.  Moderators use biosketches when introducing speakers. Colleagues use biosketches when referring professionals.  Many appointment considerations begin with a biosketch. \nWriting a biosketch that gets a person noticed is both an art and science.  Through this presentation\, attendees will gain a better understanding of what material to include in the biosketch that highlights the individual’s talent. \n

SUMMARY:Webinar | How to Engage Silent Learners
DESCRIPTION:Many of us learn best in silence and need time to reflect before saying or writing our thoughts. In synchronous online meetings (and in physical meetings) we often mistake visual and vocal activity for engagement and learning\, while silence is interpreted as a lack of interest or even laziness. \nBecause synchronous meetings tend to be dominated by a vocal minority\, contributions are mostly spontaneous with little time for reflection. There are many reasons people are silent in class or in a meeting. We must develop new methods to allow quiet attendees to present their ideas and engage in discussion instead of being drowned out by their more outspoken colleagues. \nBreakout groups can be very rewarding but only if you already know the rest of the group or have a group of confident\, talkative participants. Many students simply leave the meeting when breakout groups are announced. This is not typically due to a lack of interest but a fear of discussing complex issues with a group of strangers. \nIn this webinar\, you’ll learn how online tools and methods can extend the discussion to engage all participants in the way that suits them best. Simple techniques to make online meetings more inclusive include using more silent reflection time\, written discussion and greater emphasis on the asynchronous activity before and after the synchronous session. \nKey takeaways \nYou’ll come away with a better understanding of how to: \n\nIdentify and understand reasons for silence in online meetings\nUse periods of silence in online meetings to foster reflection and widen the discussion\nCreate engaging and inclusive online activities that do not always depend on video and audio\nPromote the strengths of silent learners through more multimodal online activities\nStretch the meeting through the use of collaborative online tools\nCreate the right preconditions for fruitful breakout sessions\n\nFacilitated by:  Alastair Creelman | e-learning Specialist\, Linnaeus University\, Sweden (now retired)

SUMMARY:An Untapped Faculty Resource: Customized learning modules to enhance student learning
DESCRIPTION:The CETL Instructional Design Team as has created learning projects that have been presented at large conferences on a national and international stage\, described in published articles\, analyzed for research\, and furthered the scholarship of teaching and learning for many WesternU faculty. Some designs are more complex than others\, but all with the goal of enhancing the student learning experience. From teaching schizophrenia pharmacology\, to outlining lifestyle medicine\, to an EHR interface where students can select labs for case-based learning modules or interactions that teach students to make fiscally responsible decisions\, the IDLD Team can create a custom online learning module unique to your course needs. \n  \nSo\, as a faculty member\, how can you partner with the CETL ID Team to expand student learning? \n  \nIn this session we will: \n\nDiscuss project exemplars created by the IDLD Team\nIdentify resources to further inspire your creative learning models\nExplain how you too can partner with CETL to develop your next project and enhance student learning in your course

SUMMARY:Rubric Writing for Inline Grading in Elentra
DESCRIPTION:Writing rubrics doesn’t need to be a daunting task. The initial investment in time pays off when it cuts the time for grading of each individual assignment\, as well as provides students the feedback they need to improve their learning. With Elentra\, rubrics can be created that speed up the workflow for grading for the instructor and provide feedback to the student in one stop. This will make for a streamlined workflow in grading assignments\, SOAP notes\, papers\, and completion certificates. Grades are automatically transferred into the course gradebook. \nSession objectives: \n\nDiscuss the elements of writing a rubric: scales of mastery\, items and groupings\nDescribe the process of creating scales\, items and forms to create rubrics in Elentra\nDiscuss the inline grading process in Elentra using an attached assessment form (Rubric)\nDescribe the two areas in Elentra where they can find feedback from the rubrics

SUMMARY:IAMSE Webinar -Breaking Barriers for Racial/Ethnic Groups Underrepresented in the Health Professions
DESCRIPTION:  \nUnderrepresentation of Black\, Indigenous\, and people of color (BIPOC) in the health professions limits the U.S. health care system’s ability to meet the needs of people in these racial/ethnic groups. A growing body of research shows that patient-physician concordance of race\, language\, and social characteristics strengthen the patient-physician relationship through higher levels of trust and satisfaction. This webinar will describe the barriers that BIPOC persons face in pursuing health professions education\, present a framework for conceptualizing strategies for improving recruitment\, retention\, and academic success among BIPOC health professions trainees\, and describe examples of these strategies. The presentation will focus primarily on examples from medicine and the basic sciences. \n  \n  \nSpeaker:  Janet Coffman\, PhD\, University of California\, San Francisco

Fallout from the pandemic thrust mental health into an even broader\, brighter spotlight\, exposing long-standing sources of stress\, anxiety\, and depression and creating new ones. Mental health is integral to one’s ability to succeed academically\, and colleges and universities must work to expose the sources and consequences of mental health disorders and find ways to address them.” \n  \nIn this session we will discuss the 7 Things You Should Know About as outlined by the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative.
