SUMMARY:IAMSE Webinar -Breaking Barriers for Racial/Ethnic Groups Underrepresented in the Health Professions
DESCRIPTION:  \nUnderrepresentation of Black\, Indigenous\, and people of color (BIPOC) in the health professions limits the U.S. health care system’s ability to meet the needs of people in these racial/ethnic groups. A growing body of research shows that patient-physician concordance of race\, language\, and social characteristics strengthen the patient-physician relationship through higher levels of trust and satisfaction. This webinar will describe the barriers that BIPOC persons face in pursuing health professions education\, present a framework for conceptualizing strategies for improving recruitment\, retention\, and academic success among BIPOC health professions trainees\, and describe examples of these strategies. The presentation will focus primarily on examples from medicine and the basic sciences. \n  \n  \nSpeaker:  Janet Coffman\, PhD\, University of California\, San Francisco

SUMMARY:Webinar - How to Reach (Almost) All Learners with Universal Design for Learning
DESCRIPTION:As technology-mediated learning becomes part of the new normal across college and university curricula\, it’s important to interact with students in a way that supports their continued learning\, shows compassion and flexibility for varied circumstances\, and fits within existing time and prep demands. \nThis webinar shares low-effort “do-them-right-now” design techniques that reduce student anxiety and pressure\, reduce your instructor colleagues’ frustrations (and your own)\, and allow you to focus on engaging student interactions\, especially for those living in small\, rural\, remote and Indigenous communities. \nKey Takeaways \nThis interactive webinar session explores techniques and strategies backed by neuroscience research that shows how colleges and universities can lower barriers (and why they should) for students\, faculty and instructors. They include: \n• Access to materials\, interactions and people (in the course and beyond)\n• Assessment techniques: testing\, grades and feedback\n• Engagement strategies that make students more likely to stick with their studies despite the challenges \nHost: Dr. Thomas J. Tobin\, Teaching\, Learning\, & Technology Specialist II\, Center for Teaching\, Learning\, & Mentoring at The University of Wisconsin-Madison

SUMMARY:How Do I Lead Change from the Middle?
DESCRIPTION:New technology\, regulatory upheaval\, changing student demographics\, longstanding faculty expectations\, shifting workforce demands\, and ever-changing university operations leave deans and department chairs adrift within a sea of undifferentiated information and competing demands. Major strategic choices come from university leadership leaving deans and chairs to focus on innovation management. Through insights developed in higher education and other industries\, this program helps participants focus on the key drivers most important to foster positive change and department cohesion while enabling the leadership to succeed with the limited authority afforded to deans and department chairs. \nLEARNING GOALS \nAfter this program\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify key drivers changing schools and colleges\nCraft a strategy for strategic improvement\nProvide concrete leadership strategies to manage primary challenges\nEmphasize techniques to enhance student learning outcomes\nIncrease buy-in for faculty\, staff\, and senior administration\n\nPresented By: Jon M. Garon\, JD \nFacilitated Discussion – Tim J. Wood\, DHSc\, PA-C

SUMMARY:Webinar - Moving Beyond Data Collection to Meaningful Quality Assurance and Curriculum Improvement: The Future of Curriculum Mapping
DESCRIPTION:Curriculum mapping is often required at institutions for quality assurance and curriculum improvement. However\, many institutions are stuck at data collection and haven’t been able to aggregate the data from a course level up to a program level\, or even better\, include data from other divisions of the institution. The desired outcome is to make changes to the curriculum that will improve the program and create pathways for learning from year 1-4. Yet\, by the time mapping is completed people often experience what Wolf calls curriculum fatigue and interpretation and action is not actually taken. Further\, job cycles are inconsistent with program review cycles. Department chairs might transition. Data might be hard to access. Documents get lost. Strategic Plans get forgotten or abandoned. Wolf proposes a curriculum dashboard\, intended to bring institutional data together and keep it accessible to anyone in the job. \nIt is common for those responsible for curriculum mapping to experience frustration with a possibly mandatory policy to collect course data and apply it to course development. We’ll discuss how to move forward successfully without getting bogged down in the challenges. We’ll also explore the possibilities beyond course data\, how that can be done\, and what effect it will have program wide. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearning Goals \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEnvision a custom curriculum dashboard that encourages continuous improvement\nConsider course-based evidence and other institutional data that can be mapped\nConsider how to evolve a systems approach to mapping in their context\nUnderstand that internal advocacy is needed to make this a common goal
