SUMMARY:Zack and the Extraordinary Neuro Escape Room
DESCRIPTION:Gamification\, or the use of learning design coupled with game mechanics and logic\, has been shown to be an engaging and useful strategy in the classroom. An escape room is just one example of gamification\, and has been utilized across health profession students to promote collaboration and problem-solving. Through virtual experiential learning and team collaboration students are able to follow “Zack’s journey” and compete against the clock\, and each other\, in this virtual clinical application experience of didactic coursework.   \nThis session will describe the development\, implementation\, and outcomes (student satisfaction and engagement) of a virtual escape room incorporating a complex patient case for Doctor of Physical Therapy students. Participants will leave with the knowledge and resources of how to create a similar project in their own classrooms.  \nLearning Objectives:  \n\nDescribe the development\, implementation\, and outcomes of a virtual escape room \nIdentify how to create a similar project in one’s own classroom

SUMMARY:Based on Bandersnatch: Designing a “Choose Your Own Adventure” eLearning Module
DESCRIPTION:Emmy award winning Black Mirror: Bandersnatch was Netflix’s first interactive movie that allowed the viewer to choose the movie’s storyline.  Like the popular Choose Your Own Adventure books from the 1970’s\, Bandersnatch created multiple paths within the storyline based on the choices selected by the viewer. The question became\, can we create an eLearning module based on the framework of Bandersnatch? \n  \nIt was a question posed by a College of Pharmacy faculty member who wanted to reimagine their lecture on therapeutic medication for schizophrenia diagnosis. Bandersnatch’s creative layout and extensive branching scenarios provided the ideal format for a schizophrenia patient case study\, and Articulate Storyline was the only authoring tool powerful enough to make this idea come to life. \n  \nThe simulated case study follows the patient\, PJ\, through multiple medication timelines.  Similar to Bandersnatch\, the student chooses which medication to prescribe PJ\, and therefore chooses their own individual learning path.  Much of the module branching originates from the virtual pharmacy in which the student has six medications to prescribe to the patient.  Once a selection is made\, the student travels down the education path. \n  \nThroughout the education path the student learns about the prescribed medication\, answers questions\, participates in interactions\, and discovers common medication side-effects.  The side-effects ultimately overwhelm PJ\, and the learner is forced to return to the virtual pharmacy slide to choose another medication for the patient.  Intricate triggers are integrated within the module forcing the student to learn about\, and exhaust\, all medication options until the correct medication appears on the pharmacy shelf thereby proving the ending path of the case simulation. \n  \nThe complicated branching scenario in the eLearning module includes over 80 slides\, 40 layers\, 35 interactions\, 20 variables\, over 100 triggers\, and a result slide that captures the student’s choices along the way.  Additionally\, all the representative artwork integrated within the design was created by individuals living with schizophrenia. \n  \nIn this session we will review the creative and design process that begun with generic PowerPoint themed slides supplied by the SME and discuss how the content was reimagined and retooled to be an engaging eLearning module student experience.

SUMMARY:Five Pillars of the Mind: Redesigning Education to Suit the Brain
DESCRIPTION:Come participate in this “reader’s digest book club” session that will summarize the current book and theory  by Tracey Tokuhama-Espinosa and provide starting points for some great conversations regarding teaching and curriculum.\nThe Five Pillars of the Mind discusses a new way of looking at and categorizing knowledge and information. This new model is not meant to replace Bloom’s Taxonomy or any of the other models\, but works as a great overlay to any of these theories or taxonomies. The Five Pillars also provides a great “hook” for teaching students new ways of learning. You will surely come away with learning something new from this session. \nSession objectives. \n\nList and describe the Five Pillars\nDiscuss how the Five Pillars can complement other learning theories and taxonomies\nDiscuss how each of the Five Pillars can be used in the classroom

SUMMARY:Learning objectives: The basics on "how to" write clear learning objectives
DESCRIPTION:Learning objectives are the basis of any learning event. Ideally\, learning objectives should be shared with the learners so that they understand what is expected to be covered by the end of the session. If they are not shared\, they at least provide the “structural bones” of the lesson or learning episode. Learning objectives also serve as a map for writing assessments of student learning. This session will help you create learning objectives that are clear and communicate expectations to the learners. \nBy the end of this session\, the attendee will be able to: \n\nRecognize the common mistakes that prevent a learning objective from being helpful to learners\nList\, describe and apply the SMART steps of creating a learning objective\nDescribe and utilize the “Learning Objective Stair Step” chart to create clear learning objectives

SUMMARY:Write Questions for the Right Answer
DESCRIPTION:What happens if students write exam questions instead of taking exam questions? Writing questions is a rich learning experience. \nThe session is a micro-learning approach to the process of student-driven test items. We will consider an idea to increase student involvement in learning and self-evaluation\, minimize cheating\, decrease exam stress\, and make learning and testing experiences more meaningful. We will share ideas for how to incorporate student question writing into lesson planning and test construction. \nPlease be prepared to share your experiences with the group if you have utilized question writing as a teaching or exam strategy. We’d love to hear how it went! \n
