SUMMARY:Webinar | Cultivating Deep Learning Using Discussion Boards
DESCRIPTION:A frequent sentiment that is often heard from instructors of online courses is a general sense of dissatisfaction with traditional discussion board activities. Many report how students are often reluctant to engage in meaningful discourse or how interactions tend toward superficiality and sound something like\, “Hello\, Rob. I agree with your point and couldn’t have said it better myself.” This often leaves instructors feeling frustrated and tempted to abandon traditional discussion boards as a learning tool altogether or in search of alternative means by which to engage learner collaboration. \nAsynchronous discussion boards are a common tool used by instructors in online courses. These forums can provide an outlet to foster the interaction and collaboration that are sometimes lacking in an online learning environment. When students are engaged in conversations in these settings\, the asynchronous nature of discussions can provide them with time to reflect on their responses before interacting with their peers in a way that is often not feasible in a face-to-face discussion. In this way\, when it is used well\, the discussion board can offer the ideal blend of reflection and collaboration that promotes the construction of knowledge in an online learning environment.

SUMMARY:20 MM |What Are Three Proven Ways to Manage My Online Discussion Board and Actively Engage Students?
DESCRIPTION:Discussion boards have proven to be a valuable point of contact in online courses. However\, too often\, struggling to connect over online discussion boards leads to missed opportunities to encourage and engage with your students due to shallow engagement. This 20 Minute Mentor video by Nathan Pritts\, Ph.D.\, will provide the basis for a facilitated discussion on ways to use the discussion board beyond its basic function by highlighting three areas for faculty to improve: engagement\, community\, and expertise\, and specific strategies for doing so. \n  \nLearning Objectives: \n\nList 3 techniques to increase engagement in online discussion boards\nIdentify actions that can model the engagement you want to evoke from students\nRecognize approaches that foster a sense of community\nExplain how sharing your expertise can push students towards a deeper consideration of the subject matter\n\n

SUMMARY:Webinar | Level Up: Gamifying an Asynchronous Course on Designing Games for Learning through Modeling\, Authenticity\, and Learner Autonomy
DESCRIPTION:While the success of digital games in education continues to validate the improvement to motivation\, engagement and social influence (Groening & Binnewies\, 2019; Lopez & Tucker\, 2019)\, the impact for asynchronous adult education remains ambiguous. In a substantial course redesign\, we attempted to address notable aspects of gamification within a course that teaches how to design games for learning through higher-order skills. The course incorporates aspects of Knowles Theory of Andragogy to help drive our use of modeling\, authenticity\, and autonomy. \nAs befits a course that focuses on the design of games for learning\, we used a number of instructional design techniques unique to gamification. Learners role-played as trainees in a unique training opportunity named Why So Serious Games Academy led by a team of gaming guides — the instructor(s) — and the facilitator\, Arch McGee. Arch McGee\, a pedagogical agent\, presents as a dynamic character within the course to guide learners through the content asynchronously. As with any game\, each Level contains a custom progress bar for the various activities built within each module. These progress bars help communicate the goals. The course strives to enable learners to feel present within the abstract concepts of game design as they engage with higher-order learning objectives

SUMMARY:Webinar: Value for Money: Should Online Education be Cheaper?
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 outbreak led to a massive uptake in online education worldwide and rapidly formed or changed public opinions about the quality of online education. As a result\, there is a debate developing on whether online education provides value for money\, shaped by institutions’ concerns about cost effectiveness and students’ requests for tuition refunds. \nIn the post-pandemic era\, online education has become integrated into educational practices. More institutions than ever exploit online education to increase enrolments and revenues\, but this doesn’t guarantee the pedagogical quality of their online programs. On the other hand\, students who choose to participate in online education also bring certain expectations about its accessibility and flexibility — and expect it to be cheaper than face-to-face education. \nThis webinar is a conversation framed by different global perspectives and experiences in online education\, exploring the value-for-money topic by asking “Should online education be cheaper?”

SUMMARY:Rubric Writing for Inline Grading in Elentra
DESCRIPTION:Writing rubrics doesn’t need to be a daunting task. The initial investment in time pays off when it cuts the time for grading of each individual assignment\, as well as provides students the feedback they need to improve their learning. With Elentra\, rubrics can be created that speed up the workflow for grading for the instructor and provide feedback to the student in one stop. This will make for a streamlined workflow in grading assignments\, SOAP notes\, papers\, and completion certificates. Grades are automatically transferred into the course gradebook. \nSession objectives: \n\nDiscuss the elements of writing a rubric: scales of mastery\, items and groupings\nDescribe the process of creating scales\, items and forms to create rubrics in Elentra\nDiscuss the inline grading process in Elentra using an attached assessment form (Rubric)\nDescribe the two areas in Elentra where they can find feedback from the rubrics

SUMMARY:Webinar - Strategies for Using Badging and Micro-Credentialing in Online Courses
DESCRIPTION:Badging and micro-credentialing are becoming more prevalent in the professional world\, not just in computer science. Digital badges can also be used as an innovative curriculum design model for any course or content area. Badges can be used to identify the skills students have developed in a particular course or program and provide evidence of them to their employers and instructors. Faculty can design their own micro-credential or digital badging projects to support the learning that occurs in their course. As an educator\, micro-credentialing is a creative way to acknowledge students’ work as well as provide them with evidence of their skills and competencies. A digital badge can be placed on an e-portfolio for college\, employers\, and networking\, or upgraded to a microcredential so that it can be verified by your institution. \nThis best practices session will provide strategies and ideas for how you can get started creating digital badge projects\, find tools for designing badges\, and how you can have your students display them in their e-portfolios. You will be provided with resources and information about what digital badging is\, how it supports gamification\, increases motivation\, and how it can become a microcredential. \nKEY TAKEAWAYS:\n\nBe able to understand the differences between digital badging and micro-credentials.\nDiscover the benefits of digital badging and micro-credentials.\nReceive resources to get started on designing a skills-based project for a badge.\nLearn about free resources to support badging and e-portfolios.\nUnderstand the value and pride that come with earning and displaying badges.\nDevelop strategies and skills for using micro-credentials and badging in teaching.\n\nINTENDED AUDIENCE: \n\nK-12 Teachers\nHigher Education Faculty\nTechnology Coaches\nInstructional Designers\n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio\n\n\n\n\n\nGina Solano\n\nAssistant Professor of Educational Technology – SUNY Oneonta \n\nDr. Gina Solano is an Assistant Professor of Educational Technology. SUMMARY:Online Learning Requirements and 5 Focus Factors of RSI
DESCRIPTION:Many of us do not regularly read policies on higher education online learning requirements and regulations. Yet\, during the pandemic\, the U.S. Department of Education issued updated rules and requirements for distance education. These updated legal federal requirements now include something called “Regular and Substantive Interaction” – or RSI for short – between a student and an instructor. During this session\, we will focus on the DoE RSI requirements for online teaching and learning environments including asynchronous\, synchronous\, and blended/hybrid platforms. \n  \nWhat do these recent changes mean for faculty and the programs offering online education? How can faculty prepare their online course to meet these mandated requirements? What elements should be included within an online course to meet the RSI requirements? Where can faculty go for help? \n  \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDescribe the updated definition of distance education\nRecognize the differences between a correspondence course and distance education\nDefine RSI\nList 5 factors that are the focus of RSI\nIdentify how the IDLD team can evaluate your online course to meet RSI requirements
