SUMMARY:PBL Gamechanger: Converting Paper Cases to Online e-Learning Modules
DESCRIPTION:This session will introduce you to a PBL game-changing format utilizing Articulate Storyline. Standard written medical cases studies were transitioned into e-modules allowing for better assessment of the student’s critical thinking and decision-making skills through case selection interactions. \nThe idea was to take the traditional case-based learning method and convert the model into a case scenario to be presented in an online environment\, incentivizing correct answers and disincentivizing incorrect answers. This gamification pedagogy helps students to understand that in real-world scenarios not all diagnostics are necessary or appropriate and therefore their choices should be well thought out and intentional. The e-modules challenges learners to engage in decision-making that mirrors the clinical setting. The ending goal of the CBL e-module is to provide appropriate and cost-effective healthcare to the patient. \nIn this session\, the presenters will discuss the e-module case study development process from planning to implementation.  During the session the audience will gain access to the e-module and experience the case via their tablet\, mobile device\, or wi-fi enabled laptop.  Group discussion about the Articulate Storyline implementation will commence and participants will get to see and learn about the structure of the e-module design.  Utilizing an online case development template\, the audience will work in small groups to begin to develop their own case during the session. \nUpon completion of this session audience members will be able to: \n\n-Describe how traditional medical case-based learning can be converted into an online e-learning module within a blended learning environment.\n-Identify how Articulate Storyline can be used to develop online e-modules for medical case-based learning.\n\n*NOTE: Please bring a laptop to fully participate in the session

SUMMARY:Faculty Focus: Converting your Lecture Course into Team-Based Learning
DESCRIPTION:Team-based learning (TBL) is a collaborative teaching and learning strategy that uses a structured process to enhance student engagement and the quality of student learning.  TBL faculty report high levels of student attendance\, preparation\, participation and critical thinking.  TBL students report enjoying class\, and being more motivated and actively engaged. \nFor the current Spring term\, Dr. Yawen Peng\, DMD\, MA has transformed her lecture-based course\, Intro to Pediatric Medicine\, into a dynamic and fully engaged Team-Based Learning course for her 70 Biomedical Science students. \nDuring this session we will hear from Dr. Peng about her experience in changing the pedagogy and course structure.  How did she start to prepare for the Lecture-to-TBL transition?  What worked?  What didn’t?  How have the students reacted to the TBL format this year\, as compared to the Lecture format of last year? \nCome to this Faculty Focus session and learn\, peer-to-peer\, how to convert your lecture-format into an invigorating Team-Based Learning course! \n

SUMMARY:Innovating SoTL with 3D Learning Models
DESCRIPTION:In this Special Feature CAPE Session\, Dr. Cameron of the College of Optometry will share his newest innovation in student learning: a brain-eye pathway 3D learning model. \nThis revolutionary tool was custom-built by the ITDL team at WesternU and funded through the 2018 Educational Starter Grant provided by the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry with partial funding from The Vision Care Institute\, LLC\, an affiliate of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care\, Inc. \nRecent studies with anatomy and surgery students have shown that 3D printed models provide significant educational benefits over and above traditional textbooks and software.  This session reviews the advantages of physical models over both 3D virtualization and 2D experiences.  A live demonstration of the brain-eye model will be conducted as part of the presentation. \nJoin this session as Dr. Cameron shares in his scholarship of teaching and learning\, and discover the advantages of 3D printed physical models over computer-generated models and textbooks.  Learn how you too can partner with ITDL by taking your innovative learning concepts and turning them into a reality. \nCome explore this faculty-developed innovation\, learn about the scholarship\, and discover the research.
