SUMMARY:Webinar | Cultivating Deep Learning Using Discussion Boards
DESCRIPTION:A frequent sentiment that is often heard from instructors of online courses is a general sense of dissatisfaction with traditional discussion board activities. Many report how students are often reluctant to engage in meaningful discourse or how interactions tend toward superficiality and sound something like\, “Hello\, Rob. I agree with your point and couldn’t have said it better myself.” This often leaves instructors feeling frustrated and tempted to abandon traditional discussion boards as a learning tool altogether or in search of alternative means by which to engage learner collaboration. \nAsynchronous discussion boards are a common tool used by instructors in online courses. These forums can provide an outlet to foster the interaction and collaboration that are sometimes lacking in an online learning environment. When students are engaged in conversations in these settings\, the asynchronous nature of discussions can provide them with time to reflect on their responses before interacting with their peers in a way that is often not feasible in a face-to-face discussion. In this way\, when it is used well\, the discussion board can offer the ideal blend of reflection and collaboration that promotes the construction of knowledge in an online learning environment.

SUMMARY:AI Student Cheating Tools – What you don’t know but should.
DESCRIPTION:Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are making it easier than ever for students to cheat or assist with assignments and tests. Yes\, there has been a movement for proctored online exams and plagiarism tools\, but what about those low-stakes assignments? Is it possible for a student to fake their way through an entire college course? How about an entire college degree? \n  \nIn discovering over 20 FREE AI-assistive technologies\, we have identified various ways these AI tools can be used by students to cheat\, or assist\, their way through their education. While we will not be identifying these tools by name\, there are still common themes between the tools that professors should be aware of. We are only touching the surface of this topic and hope to begin a collaborative discussion about the future of AI in education. \n  \nIn this session we will: \n\nIdentify the different types of cheating tools that could potentially be used.\nDiscuss ideas for how professors may identify potential cheaters.\nDiscuss the ethics of using AI assistive technology in student coursework

SUMMARY:Webinar | How to Engage Silent Learners
DESCRIPTION:Many of us learn best in silence and need time to reflect before saying or writing our thoughts. In synchronous online meetings (and in physical meetings) we often mistake visual and vocal activity for engagement and learning\, while silence is interpreted as a lack of interest or even laziness. \nBecause synchronous meetings tend to be dominated by a vocal minority\, contributions are mostly spontaneous with little time for reflection. There are many reasons people are silent in class or in a meeting. We must develop new methods to allow quiet attendees to present their ideas and engage in discussion instead of being drowned out by their more outspoken colleagues. \nBreakout groups can be very rewarding but only if you already know the rest of the group or have a group of confident\, talkative participants. Many students simply leave the meeting when breakout groups are announced. This is not typically due to a lack of interest but a fear of discussing complex issues with a group of strangers. \nIn this webinar\, you’ll learn how online tools and methods can extend the discussion to engage all participants in the way that suits them best. Simple techniques to make online meetings more inclusive include using more silent reflection time\, written discussion and greater emphasis on the asynchronous activity before and after the synchronous session. \nKey takeaways \nYou’ll come away with a better understanding of how to: \n\nIdentify and understand reasons for silence in online meetings\nUse periods of silence in online meetings to foster reflection and widen the discussion\nCreate engaging and inclusive online activities that do not always depend on video and audio\nPromote the strengths of silent learners through more multimodal online activities\nStretch the meeting through the use of collaborative online tools\nCreate the right preconditions for fruitful breakout sessions\n\nFacilitated by:  Alastair Creelman | e-learning Specialist\, Linnaeus University\, Sweden (now retired)

SUMMARY:4 Misconceptions of Online Learning
DESCRIPTION:“How can faculty and instructional designers address misconceptions about online learning as they transition from reactivity to proactivity following the COVID-19 pandemic?” \nIn March 2020\, the shift to online learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic occurred quickly\, leaving many higher education institutions with just a weekend to prepare. The result was Emergency Remote Instruction (ERI)\, and not true Online Learning structure and design. As we move from reactive to proactive design planning within the online learning environment\, we need to squash the ERI-created misconceptions that we have become familiar with over the last two years. \nBased on the EDUCAUSE Article with the same name\, this session will: \n\nIdentify 4 common misconceptions about online learning\nDiscuss creative teaching solutions to counteract the corresponding misconception\nDescribe how technology can be utilized to solve online teaching challenges\nIdentify how creating positive and engaging learning environments to promote success for online students
