SUMMARY:Webinar | How to Improve and Promote Student Engagement in the Online Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Lectures rarely provide optimal learning environments that secure effective\, sustained learning outcomes. Online learning requires classrooms designed to engage learners and build a sense of ownership of their knowledge. \nAs we explore the future of learning in higher education post-pandemic\, what do we need to know about student engagement? How do we design our classes and the learning experience to balance what we need to teach with engaged learning? \nWe must ask ourselves: Are student engagement and activity-based learning possible in all subjects? What does the research tell us about student engagement? What are some of the cautions about student engagement we should be aware of? \nIn this interactive webinar\, Dr. Amy Sloan brings to the table her considerable experience in program and course design and a strong focus on non-traditional adult learners. \nKey Takeaways \nIn this webinar\, participants explore: \n\nWhy student engagement is a critical variable in student success and what this means for course design and delivery\nExamples of effective student engagement\nThe five Cs of student engagement: connection\, consistency\, content\, community\, and compassion\nThe pitfalls of designs for engagement and the importance of tying active learning to learning outcomes\n\nSpeaker:  Amy Sloan\, Ed.D. | Lecturer\, Department of Curriculum & Instruction at Baylor University

SUMMARY:Webinar | How is the Pandemic Affecting the Future of OER?
DESCRIPTION:Multiple surveys of students\, faculty\, and administrators have all shown that the pandemic is producing fundamental changes in teaching and learning across all higher education. All groups report more optimistic views of online and hybrid learning\, as well as a greater desire for technology integration in all courses. Resistance to the use of digital materials is disappearing\, with students and faculty both expressing a greater desire to replace print materials with digital. \nMany of these changes bode well for the future growth of OER adoption. However\, other trends\, such as the time required for faculty to mold their courses into new formats have prevented them from spending the time required to find and adopt new materials. Likewise\, commercial publishers have embraced many of these changes and now represent a very different alternative than they were prior to the pandemic. Which of these competing pressures will prevail? \nAttendees will gain a much fuller understanding of OER\, allowing them to better understand if OER is an appropriate option for their institution and/or teaching. \nSpeakers: Jeff Seaman\, Ph.D. | Director – Bay View Analytics \n                 Julia Seaman\, Ph.D. | Director of Research – Bay View Analytics \n                 Daniel Williamson  | Managing Director – OpenStax

SUMMARY:Tell me about Neuroteach!
DESCRIPTION:A recap and discussion of the book by Glenn Whitman and Ian Kelleher \n  \nThere’s a new category of literature regarding teaching & learning\, it’s called Mind/Brain/Education or MBE. The book “Neuroteach: Brain Science and the Future of Education” describes this new evidence-informed genre. The book also discusses effective and not-so-effective teaching methods that leverage the body of knowledge regarding brain anatomy and physiology. Of particular interest to most educators is “The Top Twelve Research-Informed Strategies Every Teacher Should Be Doing with Every Student”. During this presentation\, we will recap the major points discussed in the book and review the Top 12 list. Come hear and discuss what the current research on teaching & learning and the brain tells us should be best practice in the classroom.

SUMMARY:Webinar - The Spark of Online Learning: How Technology and Emotion Science Invigorates Every Class (Contact North)
DESCRIPTION:Emotion and cognition are inextricably linked – how we feel and connect with others impacts both what we learn and how we retain that learning. When we engage in online learning we are not just presenting information and knowledge or teaching a skill\, we are engaged with emotional\, compassionate\, complex people. We can find ways to connect with them emotionally and personally so that we can unleash the opportunity to learn. \nThat’s the big idea here\, but it has very practical implications. These include: \n\nHow technology can be used to create an emotional connection to students.\nHow we can develop caring and supportive relationships with our students and how they can build a community of inquiry that is mutually supportive.\nHow emotions enable learning and what we can do as teachers to unleash positive emotions – hope\, optimism\, resilience\, efficacy.\n\nIn this engaging and interactive webinar\, Flower Darby will explore her developing understanding of the joy of teaching and the power of technology to enable truly engaging learning. \nKey Takeaways: \n\nUnderstanding why connecting with students at an emotional level matters for effective learning.\nIdentifying how emotions and cognition interrelate.\nExploring practical strategies to put the power of emotions to work in your classes.\nLearning how to create conditions in which you\, as a teacher\, find the joy in teaching\n\nFacilitator:  Flower Darby – Author

SUMMARY:Artificial Intelligence: Expanding the impact and access of healthcare worldwide
DESCRIPTION:Since 1957 the idea of artificial intelligence (AI) has moved from myth to reality\, and as we progress into the future\, AI will increase its stronghold in our society. While the advances of this technology are exciting to some\, others are fearful. A recent study found that nearly 69% of college graduates believe AI could take their jobs in a few years\, and with the CheXNet deep learning software being able to read a chest Xray with a higher accuracy than a medically trained professional\, the fear may be validated. \n  \nIn this session we will begin to pull back the curtain on AI. We’ll discuss the history of AI\, and the three main types of artificial intelligence while focusing in on how AI is specifically used in medicine. We will also share insight on an AI application that has some radiologists worried for their job security\, and discuss how some of these fears are unfounded.

SUMMARY:Webinar - Don’t Ignore the D.E.A.: Design\, Equity\, and Access in Online Education | Quality Matters
DESCRIPTION:The “digital divide” was a term coined in 2012 to describe the disparity amongst those students who did have internet access and those who did not (Van Dijk\, 2012). Research indicates teacher preparation and quality of teaching is the leading factor in student success. Poor preparation and inadequate quality of design strategies can deprive students of equitable use and access to optimal digital-based learning experiences (Delgado\, 2019). In this session\, we will discuss how through the incorporation of intentional design strategies\, strategies that promote equity and access\, we can create more inclusive learning experiences for our students. \n  \nPresented by Stephanie Delgado\, Senior Instructional Designer\, Florida International University

SUMMARY:Webinar: Partnerships in Instruction: Deepening Collaboration Among Instructional Support Staff\, Faculty and Students | Educause
DESCRIPTION:Teaching and learning is of critical importance to academic libraries as they seek to align themselves with the mission of their universities. To effectively support faculty in their teaching\, librarians and other instructional support staff need techniques and tools to foster collaboration. The demand for online instructional support during the pandemic affirmed the necessary role of libraries in assisting students and faculty. Join us to discuss how librarians might join forces with instructional support staff such as learning designers\, instructional technologists\, professional developers for centers of teaching and learning to enhance collaborative work with faculty and students. Questions we will explore together include: \n\nWhat are your challenges in supporting courses?\nHow can we enhance our collaboration to better support courses?\nWhat processes and relationships do we need for collaborative instructional support?\nWhat kind of professional development and/or workplace learning among staff and faculty might support these efforts?\n\nThe main audience for this QuickTalk is instructional librarians\, instructional technologists\, learning designers\, professional development staff (in centers of teaching and learning)\, and other instructional support staff who would like to collaborate to improve teaching and learning. \nFacilitated by:  John McCormick\, Associate Director of Learning Design | Brandeis University\, Waltham Massachusetts   \n                           Kathe Pelletier\, Director\, Teaching and Learning Program | Educause\, Washington\, District of Columbia \n

SUMMARY:Getting Started with Quality Matters
DESCRIPTION:Quality Matters began with a small group of Maryland colleagues who were trying to solve a common problem among institutions: how do we measure and guarantee the quality of a course? This question became important because many institutions were trying to create a system where they could share available seats in their online courses with other institutions. Because of this\, they worked to create courses of quality for their students\, regardless of where the course originated. In 2003\, the colleagues created the Quality Matters program\, which would create a scalable process for course quality assurance.  \nIn this session\, participants will be introduced to Quality Matters and how it can be helpful in effective course development. Participants will also look at some of the rubrics that are central to Quality Matters implementation.   \n  \n  \nSession Objectives:  \n\nProvide background and overview of Quality Matters  \nReview Quality Matters rubrics for higher education \nDescribe the benefits of using Quality Matters for course quality and development \n\n

SUMMARY:Connecting Educational Concepts with Mind Mapping Techniques
DESCRIPTION:Mind mapping is a technique used to visually outline information. By using words\, pictures and diagrams\, mind mapping can help professors teach connections in course material\, as well as help students study. \n  \nThe main concept\, or idea\, is at the center of the mind map. From the nucleus-center\, themes associated with the main concept branch out; and from each of these themes\, additional branches or twigs begin to grow as attributing information begins to unveil itself as a subset of the theme or idea. Mind mapping technique can help students visualize subject content and conceptually display how various ideas are interconnected. \n  \nIn this CETL Session we will: \n– explain the basic theory of mind mapping \n– identify how larger concepts can be broken down into smaller themes and ideas \n– list various educational technology tools to assist in the creation of a mind map \n– identify example mind maps used in medical education \n– apply new knowledge by creating a mind map \n
