SUMMARY:Adding Another Dimension to Your Class - Enhancing Anatomical Visuals
DESCRIPTION:New 3D visualizations and processes are being used in the medical field every day.  Come and see how our professors and students are using 3D technologies to prepare for the field they will be practicing in.   We will be showcasing existing projects and discuss ways your class could benefit.   Bring a laptop or tablet if you have one. \n  \n\nRecognize various ways our colleges are using 3D visualization.\nBe able to locate and use existing  3D models that can be used in class and student study.\nIdentify areas where 3D can help your students understand difficult concepts or create projects of their own.

SUMMARY:Using TED Ed in the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:You’ve heard of TED Talks\, but have you heard of TED Ed? TED Ed videos are short produced videos (usually 2-8 minutes long) on various topics that are often discussed in the classroom. More than a few of the videos deal with aspects related to science\, medicine and healthcare in a very interesting and engaging way. The TED Ed interface also allows the instructor to provide further engagement with the material by providing quiz questions\, as well as opportunities to personalize the material for your class. \nCome learn how you can use this free Online Educational Resource in your course

SUMMARY:Designing better learning experiences using Gamification elements
DESCRIPTION:Gamification is the concept of applying game-design elements (e.g. point scoring\, competition\, rewards) to drive game-like behavior in non-game settings to make them more fun and engaging. Already video games aimed at teaching medical education are making their ways into schools. These games do not replace lectures; instead they reinforce the curriculum in a way that is both interactive and entertaining. \n \nIn a recent report\, medical students report significantly higher rates of burnout when compared to age-matched fellow college graduates. Too often medical students lose their motivation because of emotional exhaustion\, depersonalization and a diminished sense of personal accomplishment. Medical students should no longer see their education as a challenge to overcome. They should see it as a game that can be won.\n\n\nby Abigail Cline at Medical College of Georgia\n\n \nIn this training you will learn about:\n \nWhat is Gamification and the “Flow” theory?\n \nWhat are the gaming elements that make games so engaging? \n \nHow to design better learning experiences using gaming elements to drive students engagement?

SUMMARY:PBL Gamechanger: Converting Paper Cases to Online e-Learning Modules
DESCRIPTION:This session will introduce you to a PBL game-changing format utilizing Articulate Storyline. Standard written medical cases studies were transitioned into e-modules allowing for better assessment of the student’s critical thinking and decision-making skills through case selection interactions. \nThe idea was to take the traditional case-based learning method and convert the model into a case scenario to be presented in an online environment\, incentivizing correct answers and disincentivizing incorrect answers. This gamification pedagogy helps students to understand that in real-world scenarios not all diagnostics are necessary or appropriate and therefore their choices should be well thought out and intentional. The e-modules challenges learners to engage in decision-making that mirrors the clinical setting. The ending goal of the CBL e-module is to provide appropriate and cost-effective healthcare to the patient. \nIn this session\, the presenters will discuss the e-module case study development process from planning to implementation.  During the session the audience will gain access to the e-module and experience the case via their tablet\, mobile device\, or wi-fi enabled laptop.  Group discussion about the Articulate Storyline implementation will commence and participants will get to see and learn about the structure of the e-module design.  Utilizing an online case development template\, the audience will work in small groups to begin to develop their own case during the session. \nUpon completion of this session audience members will be able to: \n\n-Describe how traditional medical case-based learning can be converted into an online e-learning module within a blended learning environment.\n-Identify how Articulate Storyline can be used to develop online e-modules for medical case-based learning.\n\n*NOTE: Please bring a laptop to fully participate in the session

SUMMARY:Innovating Anatomy with 3D Printing Technologies & Lab Tour
DESCRIPTION:3D Medical Printing continues to be one of the top trends in medical education.  Here at WesternU we have the equipment and the opportunity to be at the cutting-edge of this trend.  With the help of the EdTech Team\, faculty can develop 3D models and prototypes for use in their courses. \nPublished research outlines how 3D printed models can provide an appropriate supplement to cadaveric materials and may even have certain benefits over the organic materials.  Furthermore\, a 2019 study suggests that 3D printing has the potential to significantly improve research knowledge and the skills of new practitioners. \nDuring this session we will share examples of how 3D printing is currently utilized in medical education.  Attendees will get to tour the 3D Printing Lab and learn about the technology and materials available here at WesternU. Lastly\, attendees will use their new knowledge and inspiration to begin brainstorming on how to merge their current practices with 3D technologies for further development and learning opportunities in the classroom. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDefine how 3D printing is currently used in medical education\nIdentify the available printing technologies and materials available at the 3D Printing Lab\nBegin to prepare a plan to develop 3D models and use those assets in the curriculum
