SUMMARY:Webinar | Cultivating Deep Learning Using Discussion Boards
DESCRIPTION:A frequent sentiment that is often heard from instructors of online courses is a general sense of dissatisfaction with traditional discussion board activities. Many report how students are often reluctant to engage in meaningful discourse or how interactions tend toward superficiality and sound something like\, “Hello\, Rob. I agree with your point and couldn’t have said it better myself.” This often leaves instructors feeling frustrated and tempted to abandon traditional discussion boards as a learning tool altogether or in search of alternative means by which to engage learner collaboration. \nAsynchronous discussion boards are a common tool used by instructors in online courses. These forums can provide an outlet to foster the interaction and collaboration that are sometimes lacking in an online learning environment. When students are engaged in conversations in these settings\, the asynchronous nature of discussions can provide them with time to reflect on their responses before interacting with their peers in a way that is often not feasible in a face-to-face discussion. In this way\, when it is used well\, the discussion board can offer the ideal blend of reflection and collaboration that promotes the construction of knowledge in an online learning environment.

SUMMARY:Webinar | The Dual Role of Faculty Advising in Faculty Leadership and Student Success: A Time for Discussion
DESCRIPTION:As Carol Moore notes in her article\, “Advising: Meeting Student Needs?”\, “only 22% of colleges have the advising function staffed by professional advisors.” At schools with professional advisors\, students often encounter a well-oiled machine of advising that transitions them from their first years of college with a general advisor to more focused work with a major-specific faculty member or advisor. Students at institutions without professional advisors need that same kind of support and guidance in navigating their academic careers\, and if they do not receive it\, they may struggle to retain at the institution. At the majority of institutions\, meanwhile\, undergraduate students are too often left with faculty advisors who are neither trained nor given the time to provide appropriate advising. \nJoin us for a one-hour facilitated discussion on the challenges of faculty advising and how to equip faculty with the skills to be successful advisors. You’ll have the opportunity to discuss how your institution prepares faculty for advising\, as well as what changes you’d need to make to incorporate advising as service into promotion and tenure portfolios. The author\, Carol Moore\, will be present to answer your questions and share her thoughts about the changes needed to ensure student success in today’s higher ed landscape. \nFacilitator:   Carol Moore. SUMMARY:IAMSE Webinar -Breaking Barriers for Racial/Ethnic Groups Underrepresented in the Health Professions
DESCRIPTION:  \nUnderrepresentation of Black\, Indigenous\, and people of color (BIPOC) in the health professions limits the U.S. health care system’s ability to meet the needs of people in these racial/ethnic groups. A growing body of research shows that patient-physician concordance of race\, language\, and social characteristics strengthen the patient-physician relationship through higher levels of trust and satisfaction. This webinar will describe the barriers that BIPOC persons face in pursuing health professions education\, present a framework for conceptualizing strategies for improving recruitment\, retention\, and academic success among BIPOC health professions trainees\, and describe examples of these strategies. The presentation will focus primarily on examples from medicine and the basic sciences. \n  \n  \nSpeaker:  Janet Coffman\, PhD\, University of California\, San Francisco

SUMMARY:Webinar - Strategies for Using Badging and Micro-Credentialing in Online Courses
DESCRIPTION:Badging and micro-credentialing are becoming more prevalent in the professional world\, not just in computer science. Digital badges can also be used as an innovative curriculum design model for any course or content area. Badges can be used to identify the skills students have developed in a particular course or program and provide evidence of them to their employers and instructors. Faculty can design their own micro-credential or digital badging projects to support the learning that occurs in their course. As an educator\, micro-credentialing is a creative way to acknowledge students’ work as well as provide them with evidence of their skills and competencies. A digital badge can be placed on an e-portfolio for college\, employers\, and networking\, or upgraded to a microcredential so that it can be verified by your institution. \nThis best practices session will provide strategies and ideas for how you can get started creating digital badge projects\, find tools for designing badges\, and how you can have your students display them in their e-portfolios. You will be provided with resources and information about what digital badging is\, how it supports gamification\, increases motivation\, and how it can become a microcredential. \nKEY TAKEAWAYS:\n\nBe able to understand the differences between digital badging and micro-credentials.\nDiscover the benefits of digital badging and micro-credentials.\nReceive resources to get started on designing a skills-based project for a badge.\nLearn about free resources to support badging and e-portfolios.\nUnderstand the value and pride that come with earning and displaying badges.\nDevelop strategies and skills for using micro-credentials and badging in teaching.\n\nINTENDED AUDIENCE: \n\nK-12 Teachers\nHigher Education Faculty\nTechnology Coaches\nInstructional Designers\n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio\n\n\n\n\n\nGina Solano\n\nAssistant Professor of Educational Technology – SUNY Oneonta \n\nDr. Gina Solano is an Assistant Professor of Educational Technology. She teaches a variety of courses in educational technology\, research\, and teaching methods. SUMMARY:Webinar | Enhanced Learning in the New Digital Classroom (Educause)
DESCRIPTION:In the spring of 2020\, the COVID-19 pandemic forced educational institutions at all levels to switch instruction almost overnight to virtual classrooms. With scant time to marshal their resources\, officials in K–12 schools and higher education had to figure out how to deliver curricula\, share materials\, foster collaboration\, and keep students engaged. \nGiven the number of teachers who lacked experience with distance learning and the many students who lacked access to the necessary technology\, schools faced significant challenges. Since then\, educators have learned a great deal about how to deliver instruction in a hybrid learning environment. Hear from the Center for Digital Education on recent research and receive a copy of the report. \nOutcomes\n\nReview research highlights from the report “Enhanced Learning in the New Digital Classroom”\nLearn how to help combat fatigue on your campus\nReceive access to the research report

SUMMARY:Webinar | How To Improve Assessment and Feedback Practice
DESCRIPTION:Post-secondary institutions note that changing assessment practice has become a key priority. So\, what could the future of assessment and feedback look like? \nThe digital transformation of the education sector over the past two years — whether as an acceleration of a planned strategy or an emergency response — has changed the priorities for higher education. \nValuable lessons have been learned about equity\, learning design and interoperability. The move away from traditional exams to other forms of assessment has seen many students\, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds\, perform better. \nThe future of assessment and feedback looks promising. But key to this is shaping a future where accessible\, inclusive and compassionate practices are designed with student needs and experiences in mind. \nIn this webinar\, you’ll learn the seven principles of good assessment and feedback. Based on a sound body of evidence of good pedagogic practice from across the UK and internationally\, these principles can be applied to all aspects of learning design and teaching in all sectors of education. They offer an actionable way to improve learning\, teaching and assessment\, underpinned by the effective application of technology. \n  \nKey Takeaways \n  \nYou’ll come away from this engaging and interactive webinar with an understanding of how to: \n\nHelp learners understand what they are aiming for by engaging them with the requirements and performance criteria for each task\nSupport learners’ personalized needs by being accessible\, inclusive and compassionate\nFoster active learning by recognizing that engagement with learning resources\, tutors and peers offer opportunities for formative development\nDevelop autonomous learners by encouraging self-generated feedback\, self-regulation\, reflection\, dialogue and peer review\nManage workloads effectively by having the right assessment\, at the right time\, supported by efficient business processes\nFoster a motivated learning community by involving students in decision making and supporting staff in developing their own practices\nPromote learner employability by assessing authentic tasks and encouraging ethical conduct\n\n

SUMMARY:Webinar | How is the Pandemic Affecting the Future of OER?
DESCRIPTION:Multiple surveys of students\, faculty\, and administrators have all shown that the pandemic is producing fundamental changes in teaching and learning across all higher education. All groups report more optimistic views of online and hybrid learning\, as well as a greater desire for technology integration in all courses. Resistance to the use of digital materials is disappearing\, with students and faculty both expressing a greater desire to replace print materials with digital. \nMany of these changes bode well for the future growth of OER adoption. However\, other trends\, such as the time required for faculty to mold their courses into new formats have prevented them from spending the time required to find and adopt new materials. Likewise\, commercial publishers have embraced many of these changes and now represent a very different alternative than they were prior to the pandemic. Which of these competing pressures will prevail? \nAttendees will gain a much fuller understanding of OER\, allowing them to better understand if OER is an appropriate option for their institution and/or teaching. \nSpeakers: Jeff Seaman\, Ph.D. | Director – Bay View Analytics \n                 Julia Seaman\, Ph.D. | Director of Research – Bay View Analytics \n                 Daniel Williamson  | Managing Director – OpenStax

SUMMARY:Webinar | Online Copyright Education Center Update and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Over the past year\, Columbia University Libraries Copyright Advisory Services\, the Copyright Office at the University of Michigan Library\, and an advisory group of world-class experts piloted a new online copyright education center with classes on copyright issues and management. Our vision is to inform and empower our community\, recognizing that copyright and related issues are foundational to our networked\, digital world and emphasizing equitable access to reliable\, relevant\, understandable information. Across museums\, libraries\, archives\, research\, scholarship\, and education there is a convergence of copyright issues\, their impact on day-to-day and strategic decisions\, and the distinct ways in which copyright turns up across these sectors. The aim of the initiative is to address these points of convergence.
