SUMMARY:Webinar - The Spark of Online Learning: How Technology and Emotion Science Invigorates Every Class (Contact North)
DESCRIPTION:Emotion and cognition are inextricably linked – how we feel and connect with others impacts both what we learn and how we retain that learning. When we engage in online learning we are not just presenting information and knowledge or teaching a skill\, we are engaged with emotional\, compassionate\, complex people. We can find ways to connect with them emotionally and personally so that we can unleash the opportunity to learn. \nThat’s the big idea here\, but it has very practical implications. These include: \n\nHow technology can be used to create an emotional connection to students.\nHow we can develop caring and supportive relationships with our students and how they can build a community of inquiry that is mutually supportive.\nHow emotions enable learning and what we can do as teachers to unleash positive emotions – hope\, optimism\, resilience\, efficacy.\n\nIn this engaging and interactive webinar\, Flower Darby will explore her developing understanding of the joy of teaching and the power of technology to enable truly engaging learning. \nKey Takeaways: \n\nUnderstanding why connecting with students at an emotional level matters for effective learning.\nIdentifying how emotions and cognition interrelate.\nExploring practical strategies to put the power of emotions to work in your classes.\nLearning how to create conditions in which you\, as a teacher\, find the joy in teaching\n\nFacilitator:  Flower Darby – Author

SUMMARY:Webinar - How to Design a Micro-Credential that Meets Demand (Contact North/Nord)
DESCRIPTION:Canada has about 10\,000 micro-credentials. But many do not meet the definition of what they are intended to be: short\, focused\, intensive learning linked to skills that are in demand from employers\, industry or a profession. The situation is similar in the U.S. and Europe. The important question is how to design and develop micro-credentials that help more people find jobs\, change jobs or develop the skills they need to keep the jobs they already have. What needs to change in the current approach to this fast-changing form of learning? What can Canadian educators learn from developments elsewhere in the world? \nKey Takeaways \nBy participating in this webinar\, you will: \n\nUnderstand the current state of micro-credentials in Canada and the U.S. including those offered by MOOC providers (Coursera\, edX and FutureLearn) and industry.\nRecognize the five major limitations of the current offerings\nExamine an assessment-driven approach to skills and competency development linked to gap-based microlearning.\nAssess five major design changes needed to make micro-credentials work for students\, employers and communities.\nExplore the future of micro-credentials and long-form credentials: Are they gamechangers or “old wine in new bottles?\n\nFacilitator:   Stephen Murgatroyd | Chief Innovation Officer\, Contact North| Contact Nord

SUMMARY:Webinar - Don’t Ignore the D.E.A.: Design\, Equity\, and Access in Online Education | Quality Matters
DESCRIPTION:The “digital divide” was a term coined in 2012 to describe the disparity amongst those students who did have internet access and those who did not (Van Dijk\, 2012). Research indicates teacher preparation and quality of teaching is the leading factor in student success. Poor preparation and inadequate quality of design strategies can deprive students of equitable use and access to optimal digital-based learning experiences (Delgado\, 2019). In this session\, we will discuss how through the incorporation of intentional design strategies\, strategies that promote equity and access\, we can create more inclusive learning experiences for our students. \n  \nPresented by Stephanie Delgado\, Senior Instructional Designer\, Florida International University

SUMMARY:Webinar: Ten Features of the Future of Learning Beyond School: How Can We Build Back Better?
DESCRIPTION:The future is not a straight line from the past. As universities and colleges come to terms with some new realities – operational\, financial\, logistical\, ethical – what does their future look like? What needs to change? What will change? \nThe Challenge \nCOVID-19 has been a game changer for governments\, universities and colleges. They now need to imagine a different future – one with fewer international students\, less money\, more flexible and different approaches to learning\, new competitors and new approaches to credentials\, skills and competencies. \nGovernments and employers are also looking towards colleges and universities to respond to urgent needs to upskill and reskill the workforce\, many of whom are deeply impacted by changes in the employment landscape. Whole sectors – hospitality and tourism\, airlines\, retail – have been massively impacted. \nAlready\, some universities and colleges around the world have closed. Others are reducing programs and services and more changes are on the horizon. In Canada\, some governments are investing in post-secondary education while others are making dramatic reductions in funding. All governments are exploring new approaches to apprenticeship and skills. What is on the horizon in terms of policy\, funding and expectations? \nThis presentation will build on recent contributions to the work on strategic foresight related to post-secondary education and the place of technology in the future of learning. \nKey Takeaways \nAs a result of this presentation\, you will better understand: \n\nThe social\, economic and political challenges facing colleges\, universities and training organizations in Canada.\nThe five big challenges colleges and universities face as we begin to imaging a post-pandemic world.\nThe ten dominant change features of post-secondary education post-pandemic.\nThe three imperatives for a different future which are required from policy makers and institutional leaders.\n\n\n\n\nTags: COVID & Online Learning \n\n\nHost:\n\n\n\n\nDr. Stephen Murgatroyd\nContact North | Contact Nord Research Associate\n\n\nDr. Stephen Murgatroyd\, FRSA teaches strategic foresight at the University of Alberta and University of Toronto and strategic management at Athabasca University. A pioneer of online learning – he led the team that created the world’s first fully online MBA in 1994 – he also serves as Contact North | Contact Nord’s Chief Innovation Officer. \nStephen has authored over forty books\, including two on strategic foresight\, and has consulted for educational organizations and governments in Paraguay\, Chile\, New Zealand\, USA\, Canada\, Australia\, Dubai\, UK\, Hong Kong\, China\, South Africa and Europe.

SUMMARY:Webinar: How to Use Zoom in the New (Blended) Normal: Models for Student Inclusion and Engagement
DESCRIPTION:As plans ramp up for students and faculty to gradually return to campus this fall and winter\, educators will face a new normal. \nSome pre-pandemic\, face-to-face classes will still be taught fully online. Some will offer students a mix of face-to-face and online study\, while others will be largely face-to-face with an online component. \nZoom will have a significant role to play in all these scenarios\, but remote students may feel alienated and disengaged from their in-class peers unless preventive steps are taken. \nKey Takeaways \nTailored to instructors\, instructional designers and academic administrators\, this engaging webinar shares seven models for Zoom-supported teaching and learning. Host Dr. Ron Owston helps participants understand how to ensure all students are fully included and engaged in these models: \n\nFully synchronous\nBlended synchronous and asynchronous\nFlex blend: Students alternate between attending face-to-face and online according to predetermined schedules\nHyFlex: Students freely choose whether to attend face-to-face or synchronously\nTraditional blend: Mainly face-to-face with an integrated online component\nFlipped: Content delivered online\, students attend in small\, in-person groups for guided/tutorial work\nFace-to-face with Zoom breakout discussion/work groups\n\n\n\n\nTags: Zoom \n\n\nHost:\n\n\n\n\nDr. Ron Owston\nContact North | Contact Nord Research Associate\n\n\nA pioneer in online teaching and research\, Dr. Owston ranks among Google Scholar’s most cited blended learning researchers globally. \nThe founding Director of the Institute for Research in Learning Technologies he is a former Dean of the Faculty of Education and University Professor Emeritus at York University. \nDr. Owston’s webinars on effective use of Zoom for teaching as part of the Contact North I Contact Nord Webinar Series are lauded by educators around the world: \n“I’ve really learned a lot the last 6 or so months watching your Zoom webinars. My students have noticed and I share with you their kudos. I look forward to upping my Breakout Zoom Room game!” \n“I really appreciate Ron’s effort and I need to watch this all over again to try the different possibilities.” \n“Thank you very much Ron! This was a very informative session! I am excited to try to put together a class for my learners.” \n“I wanted to comment on how useful these sessions have been – I have learned a lot from attending and/or watching them afterward. And\, I include them in all my PD announcements to encourage faculty to attend.” \n“Thank you\, thank you\, thank you—really wonderful!” \nHis website is http://RonOwston.ca

SUMMARY:Webinar: The Hybrid Campus: How COVID-19 and Technology are Reshaping Colleges and Universities
DESCRIPTION:As higher education leaders\, decision-makers and governments look to the future of colleges and universities\, the decisions they make now will have impacts on our higher education system for years to come. \nThere is no doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on our colleges and universities. But there is more to come. While many seek a return to “normal”\, they will need to adjust to the new normal. What does this involve? \n• A Hybrid Campus: All services\, not just teaching and learning\, will need to be offered online – advising\, careers guidance\, counseling\, registrar\, finance.\n• Rethinking the Academic Portfolio: Teaching and learning will need to be provided in every case as both blended and online – we can no longer assume that social gatherings in large numbers will be possible. We can also better serve a more diverse population through a hybrid approach.\n• Refocus Learning and the Student Experience – focus on lifelong learning\, engaged and authentic learning\, and collaborative learning experience. Intensify project-based learning and strengthen ties with alumni. \nBecoming hybrid will encourage innovation\, increase access\, improve quality and lower costs. It will be a compelling new model for many colleges and universities\, not just in the U.S. and Canada\, but around the world. It requires a real rethinking and reimagining of all workflows\, technology adoption and opportunities at colleges and universities. \nThere are several institutions already exemplifying some key features of this future – University of Central Florida\, Georgia State University – which will be used to illustrate this thinking. \nIn this interactive webinar\, Cole Clark\, Managing Director of Higher Education at Deloitte and author Jeffrey Selingo\, will share their thinking and the findings from some recent explorations. \n  \nKey Takeaways \n• How the academic portfolio will be reshaped by a shift to the hybrid campus.\n• What the hybrid campus means for the college and university

SUMMARY:Webinar | Anti-Racism in Academia: A Learning Journey - Persist (Educause)
DESCRIPTION:n response to the dialogue across EDUCAUSE community groups and within our personal lives\, a small group of community leaders have developed the Anti-Racism in Academia: A Learning Journey (ARiA) series. The ARiA series was created to inspire a more understanding and inclusive community in higher education by engaging professionals of all levels and across disciplines. Combatting racism on a personal\, professional\, and communal scale requires time and intentional effort; it really is a journey of discovery and understanding. \nThe ARiA series framework is organized into five parts: Reach Out\, Listen\, Learn\, Act\, Persist. \nThis month’s focus is on Persisting to sustain your diversity efforts. Come join us for the kickoff webinar\, and sign-up for a breakout discussion. \nOutcomes\nWe want to enable participants to get the most out of their learning journey. We designed the ARiA framework to accomplish three main goals: \n\nCreate safe spaces to explore\, share\, and learn.\nPromote personal and professional growth through expanded awareness and expanded understanding of different racial perspectives.\nEmpower participants to foster a more inclusive and understanding higher ed community with expanded ideas\, perspectives\, and strategies.\n\nSpeakers:  Tonya Bennett | Director of Educational Technology @PennVet\, University of Pennsylvania\, Jonathan B. SUMMARY:Webinar - Building an Inclusive Workplace: Session 2 - Live Recording
DESCRIPTION:Higher education is facing change. How efficiently our IT organizations respond to tightening budgets\, cybersecurity threats\, academic program changes\, and merging service units will depend on inclusive teams. While nimble technology can support many services\, it is the people in an organization who provide creative solutions to challenges. \n Outcomes \n\nRealize that everyone has biases\nUnderstand what an inclusive team is and the value in building a diverse and inclusive workplace\nPlan for a sustainable improvement process including action items for change\nReview the 5 key dynamics of successful teams and the roles and responsibilities to support them\nUnderstand how to support DEI in the workplace through a case study discussion\n\nThis two-part webinar series will discuss how to build inclusive teams and engage participants in the practice of building an inclusive team.
