SUMMARY:4 Misconceptions of Online Learning
DESCRIPTION:“How can faculty and instructional designers address misconceptions about online learning as they transition from reactivity to proactivity following the COVID-19 pandemic?” \nIn March 2020\, the shift to online learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic occurred quickly\, leaving many higher education institutions with just a weekend to prepare. The result was Emergency Remote Instruction (ERI)\, and not true Online Learning structure and design. As we move from reactive to proactive design planning within the online learning environment\, we need to squash the ERI-created misconceptions that we have become familiar with over the last two years. \nBased on the EDUCAUSE Article with the same name\, this session will: \n\nIdentify 4 common misconceptions about online learning\nDiscuss creative teaching solutions to counteract the corresponding misconception\nDescribe how technology can be utilized to solve online teaching challenges\nIdentify how creating positive and engaging learning environments to promote success for online students

SUMMARY:Webinar - Strategies for Using Badging and Micro-Credentialing in Online Courses
DESCRIPTION:Badging and micro-credentialing are becoming more prevalent in the professional world\, not just in computer science. Digital badges can also be used as an innovative curriculum design model for any course or content area. Badges can be used to identify the skills students have developed in a particular course or program and provide evidence of them to their employers and instructors. Faculty can design their own micro-credential or digital badging projects to support the learning that occurs in their course. As an educator\, micro-credentialing is a creative way to acknowledge students’ work as well as provide them with evidence of their skills and competencies. A digital badge can be placed on an e-portfolio for college\, employers\, and networking\, or upgraded to a microcredential so that it can be verified by your institution. \nThis best practices session will provide strategies and ideas for how you can get started creating digital badge projects\, find tools for designing badges\, and how you can have your students display them in their e-portfolios. You will be provided with resources and information about what digital badging is\, how it supports gamification\, increases motivation\, and how it can become a microcredential. \nKEY TAKEAWAYS:\n\nBe able to understand the differences between digital badging and micro-credentials.\nDiscover the benefits of digital badging and micro-credentials.\nReceive resources to get started on designing a skills-based project for a badge.\nLearn about free resources to support badging and e-portfolios.\nUnderstand the value and pride that come with earning and displaying badges.\nDevelop strategies and skills for using micro-credentials and badging in teaching.\n\nINTENDED AUDIENCE: \n\nK-12 Teachers\nHigher Education Faculty\nTechnology Coaches\nInstructional Designers\n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio\n\n\n\n\n\nGina Solano\n\nAssistant Professor of Educational Technology – SUNY Oneonta \n\nDr. Gina Solano is an Assistant Professor of Educational Technology. She teaches a variety of courses in educational technology\, research\, and teaching methods. She teaches both face-to-face and online courses on such topics as technology trends\, STEAM\, multimedia\, online learning\, instructional course design\, and more. Dr. Solano is avidly involved in service learning and improving teacher technology adoption practices. When not at work\, she loves to travel\, craft\, and cook. SUMMARY:Webinar - Encouraging Student Persistence
DESCRIPTION:Colleges have long worked toward the imperative of student success. Yet\, the Covid-19 pandemic and its fallout have upended many of their efforts\, with steep declines in enrollment and retention\, particularly among Latinx and Black students. How are colleges acting now to address the needs of those students most deeply impacted by the pandemic\, in order to keep them on track to a degree? \nThe virtual forum\, “Encouraging Student Persistence\,” explores how colleges are designing new programs that take this challenge head-on. Join us as a panel of national experts and the leaders of student-support programs discuss what’s working: \n\nWhat are leaders doing differently to promote positive outcomes in support programs?\nHow are advocates moving the conversation around students in a new\, more positive direction?\nHow can this shift attitudes and\, as a result\, help students persist on their educational journeys?\n\nWith support from EdSights. \nSpeakers: \n\nOyin Adedoyin\, staff reporter\, The Chronicle of Higher Education\nMarybeth Gasman\, Samuel DeWitt Proctor Endowed Chair in Education\, Rutgers University

SUMMARY:Research Posters: Turning Drab into Fab
DESCRIPTION:We’ve seen them…we’ve made them…and we’ve walked right past them…Research Posters. \n  \nThe purpose of a research poster is to visually represent the general overview\, data\, and most relevant findings of a research project. When preparing to design your poster you’ve likely taken your thoughtful research or well-drafted manuscript and you’ve widdled it down to the bare bones with just a few remaining sentences; next you probably chopped those sentences into bullet points and then plopped those well-crafted statements into a sterile three-or-four column template\, adorned with some sort of chart\, cladly themed in the university colors. \n  \nWe’ve been using the same academic research poster templates for the last three decades. Why? \nScience has advanced tremendously since the 90’s\, why hasn’t research poster design? \n  \nIn this session\, we will: \n\ndiscuss research poster basics\ncritique traditional poster design\napply updated design techniques\nrecognize better poster design 2.0\nexplain where to go for help

SUMMARY:Webinar | Enhanced Learning in the New Digital Classroom (Educause)
DESCRIPTION:In the spring of 2020\, the COVID-19 pandemic forced educational institutions at all levels to switch instruction almost overnight to virtual classrooms. With scant time to marshal their resources\, officials in K–12 schools and higher education had to figure out how to deliver curricula\, share materials\, foster collaboration\, and keep students engaged. \nGiven the number of teachers who lacked experience with distance learning and the many students who lacked access to the necessary technology\, schools faced significant challenges. Since then\, educators have learned a great deal about how to deliver instruction in a hybrid learning environment. Hear from the Center for Digital Education on recent research and receive a copy of the report. \nOutcomes\n\nReview research highlights from the report “Enhanced Learning in the New Digital Classroom”\nLearn how to help combat fatigue on your campus\nReceive access to the research report

DESCRIPTION:In the 2015 TED Talk\, Forget the Pecking Order at Work\, Margaret Heffernan argues that competition is not the way to create organizational success. Heffernan begins with the story of William Muir and his experiments with “super chickens” to engage the audience around the themes of competition and productivity. She states that organizations are often run according to “the super chicken model\,” where the value is placed on star employees who outperform others. \n  \nAnd yet\, this isn’t what drives the most high-achieving teams. Rather\, social connections and people’s interactions with one another are the keys to success. Heffernan goes on to discuss social capital and the importance of valuing everyone in order to solve our most “wicked problems.” \n  \nShe continues by presenting research and examples from various industries to illustrate that competition is not the answer to organizational wellness. It’s a radical rethink of what drives us to do our best work\, and what it means to be a leader. Because as Heffernan points out: “Companies don’t have ideas. Only people do.” \n  \nLearning Objectives: \n\nRecite what happens when we just use Super Chickens in our work teams\nIdentify the three characteristics of the successful and highly effective teams\nExplain the terms Social Capital and helpfulness

SUMMARY:Webinar | Designing Neuroinclusive Classrooms
DESCRIPTION:Webinar Description:\nIt is estimated that approximately 30% of learners in your classroom have some form of neurodivergence such as autism\, ADHD\, or dyslexia (Conditt\, 2020). These individuals are gifted with a unique way of viewing the world and processing information. However\, they face the challenge of learning in classrooms that were not designed to accommodate their natural differences. Neurodivergent learners have unique skills and abilities that set them apart from their neurotypical counterparts. If supported effectively\, neurodivergent learners tend to excel\, especially in the STEAM fields\, and their skills can lead to significant contributions in these areas. \nProviding adequate accommodations is not straightforward because numerous individuals may not even have an official diagnosis. In fact\, there are many cases in which people haven’t recognized their neurodivergence until adulthood (Polyzoi\, Ahnemark\, Medin\, & Ginsberg\, 2018; Happe & Frith\, 2020). This makes it even more critical that\, as educators\, we take the necessary steps to ensure their time in academia truly does accommodate every learner. Join us for an engaging webinar to learn various strategies for supporting neurodivergent learners and creating neuro-inclusive classrooms. \nKey Takeaways:\n\nDiscuss how the three key areas of executive functioning (inhibitory control\, working memory\, cognitive flexibility) impact learning within the classroom\nRecognize strengths and challenges associated with neurodivergence\nExamine strategies for supporting the three areas of executive functioning in neurodivergent learners\n\nIntended Audience: \n\nJEDI advocates (Justice\, Equity\, Diversity\, Inclusion)\nAccessibility support specialists\nInstructional designers\nFaculty and instructors\nLibrarians

SUMMARY:Online Learning Requirements and 5 Focus Factors of RSI
DESCRIPTION:Many of us do not regularly read policies on higher education online learning requirements and regulations. Yet\, during the pandemic\, the U.S. Department of Education issued updated rules and requirements for distance education. These updated legal federal requirements now include something called “Regular and Substantive Interaction” – or RSI for short – between a student and an instructor. During this session\, we will focus on the DoE RSI requirements for online teaching and learning environments including asynchronous\, synchronous\, and blended/hybrid platforms. \n  \nWhat do these recent changes mean for faculty and the programs offering online education? How can faculty prepare their online course to meet these mandated requirements? What elements should be included within an online course to meet the RSI requirements? Where can faculty go for help? \n  \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDescribe the updated definition of distance education\nRecognize the differences between a correspondence course and distance education\nDefine RSI\nList 5 factors that are the focus of RSI\nIdentify how the IDLD team can evaluate your online course to meet RSI requirements
