SUMMARY:InteresTED: Super Chickens and Characteristics of Highly Effective Teams
DESCRIPTION:In the 2015 TED Talk\, Forget the Pecking Order at Work\, Margaret Heffernan argues that competition is not the way to create organizational success. Heffernan begins with the story of William Muir and his experiments with “super chickens” to engage the audience around the themes of competition and productivity. She states that organizations are often run according to “the super chicken model\,” where the value is placed on star employees who outperform others. \n  \nAnd yet\, this isn’t what drives the most high-achieving teams. Rather\, social connections and people’s interactions with one another are the keys to success. Heffernan goes on to discuss social capital and the importance of valuing everyone in order to solve our most “wicked problems.” \n  \nShe continues by presenting research and examples from various industries to illustrate that competition is not the answer to organizational wellness. It’s a radical rethink of what drives us to do our best work\, and what it means to be a leader. Because as Heffernan points out: “Companies don’t have ideas. Only people do.” \n  \nLearning Objectives: \n\nRecite what happens when we just use Super Chickens in our work teams\nIdentify the three characteristics of the successful and highly effective teams\nExplain the terms Social Capital and helpfulness

SUMMARY:Webinar | Designing Neuroinclusive Classrooms
DESCRIPTION:Webinar Description:\nIt is estimated that approximately 30% of learners in your classroom have some form of neurodivergence such as autism\, ADHD\, or dyslexia (Conditt\, 2020). These individuals are gifted with a unique way of viewing the world and processing information. However\, they face the challenge of learning in classrooms that were not designed to accommodate their natural differences. Neurodivergent learners have unique skills and abilities that set them apart from their neurotypical counterparts. If supported effectively\, neurodivergent learners tend to excel\, especially in the STEAM fields\, and their skills can lead to significant contributions in these areas. \nProviding adequate accommodations is not straightforward because numerous individuals may not even have an official diagnosis. In fact\, there are many cases in which people haven’t recognized their neurodivergence until adulthood (Polyzoi\, Ahnemark\, Medin\, & Ginsberg\, 2018; Happe & Frith\, 2020). This makes it even more critical that\, as educators\, we take the necessary steps to ensure their time in academia truly does accommodate every learner. Join us for an engaging webinar to learn various strategies for supporting neurodivergent learners and creating neuro-inclusive classrooms. \nKey Takeaways:\n\nDiscuss how the three key areas of executive functioning (inhibitory control\, working memory\, cognitive flexibility) impact learning within the classroom\nRecognize strengths and challenges associated with neurodivergence\nExamine strategies for supporting the three areas of executive functioning in neurodivergent learners\n\nIntended Audience: \n\nJEDI advocates (Justice\, Equity\, Diversity\, Inclusion)\nAccessibility support specialists\nInstructional designers\nFaculty and instructors\nLibrarians

SUMMARY:Online Learning Requirements and 5 Focus Factors of RSI
DESCRIPTION:Many of us do not regularly read policies on higher education online learning requirements and regulations. Yet\, during the pandemic\, the U.S. Department of Education issued updated rules and requirements for distance education. These updated legal federal requirements now include something called “Regular and Substantive Interaction” – or RSI for short – between a student and an instructor. During this session\, we will focus on the DoE RSI requirements for online teaching and learning environments including asynchronous\, synchronous\, and blended/hybrid platforms. \n  \nWhat do these recent changes mean for faculty and the programs offering online education? How can faculty prepare their online course to meet these mandated requirements? What elements should be included within an online course to meet the RSI requirements? Where can faculty go for help? \n  \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDescribe the updated definition of distance education\nRecognize the differences between a correspondence course and distance education\nDefine RSI\nList 5 factors that are the focus of RSI\nIdentify how the IDLD team can evaluate your online course to meet RSI requirements

SUMMARY:Telling a Story with Data: Combining PowerBI and data visualization
DESCRIPTION:Data has a story to tell\, but are you telling it correctly? Are you using the best tool available? Or are you using the best visualization to get the story told.? Who doesn’t like a pie\, but as a chart? Is serving pie the best way to visualize your data. Maybe a tornado is needed instead? \nIn this session attendees will be given a brief overview of MS PowerBI. They will be shown how to access PowerBI\, and ways to get data into the program. We will also discuss the basics of choosing the correct type of chart to best represent your data.

SUMMARY:Webinar | The Evolving Conversation About Quality in Online Learning
DESCRIPTION:During the course of the COVID-19 pandemic\, online learning rose to prominence in a way that may have otherwise taken years (if not decades) to transpire. Digital forms of postsecondary education were suddenly thrust into the national conversation\, as almost all educators and students moved to what became\nknown as emergency remote instruction for at least several months. \nIn this webinar\, you’ll hear from special report author Kristi DePaul and Inside Higher Ed Editor Doug Lederman as they discuss the newly-released special report\, “The Evolving Conversation About Quality in Online Learning\,” which examines how the pandemic has reshaped both the practice and perceptions of online\, hybrid and blended learning in postsecondary education. \nYou’ll walk away better informed about:\n• Changing student demands and expectations regarding online quality\n• Growing institutional support and training for faculty members\n• How quality is judged in virtual learning\, and who does the judging\n• Best practices for high-quality instruction\, however it is delivered

SUMMARY:Webinar | How To Improve Assessment and Feedback Practice
DESCRIPTION:Post-secondary institutions note that changing assessment practice has become a key priority. So\, what could the future of assessment and feedback look like? \nThe digital transformation of the education sector over the past two years — whether as an acceleration of a planned strategy or an emergency response — has changed the priorities for higher education. \nValuable lessons have been learned about equity\, learning design and interoperability. The move away from traditional exams to other forms of assessment has seen many students\, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds\, perform better. \nThe future of assessment and feedback looks promising. But key to this is shaping a future where accessible\, inclusive and compassionate practices are designed with student needs and experiences in mind. \nIn this webinar\, you’ll learn the seven principles of good assessment and feedback. Based on a sound body of evidence of good pedagogic practice from across the UK and internationally\, these principles can be applied to all aspects of learning design and teaching in all sectors of education. They offer an actionable way to improve learning\, teaching and assessment\, underpinned by the effective application of technology. \n  \nKey Takeaways \n  \nYou’ll come away from this engaging and interactive webinar with an understanding of how to: \n\nHelp learners understand what they are aiming for by engaging them with the requirements and performance criteria for each task\nSupport learners’ personalized needs by being accessible\, inclusive and compassionate\nFoster active learning by recognizing that engagement with learning resources\, tutors and peers offer opportunities for formative development\nDevelop autonomous learners by encouraging self-generated feedback\, self-regulation\, reflection\, dialogue and peer review\nManage workloads effectively by having the right assessment\, at the right time\, supported by efficient business processes\nFoster a motivated learning community by involving students in decision making and supporting staff in developing their own practices\nPromote learner employability by assessing authentic tasks and encouraging ethical conduct\n\n
