SUMMARY:Webinar | How To Improve Assessment and Feedback Practice
DESCRIPTION:Post-secondary institutions note that changing assessment practice has become a key priority. So\, what could the future of assessment and feedback look like? \nThe digital transformation of the education sector over the past two years — whether as an acceleration of a planned strategy or an emergency response — has changed the priorities for higher education. \nValuable lessons have been learned about equity\, learning design and interoperability. The move away from traditional exams to other forms of assessment has seen many students\, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds\, perform better. \nThe future of assessment and feedback looks promising. But key to this is shaping a future where accessible\, inclusive and compassionate practices are designed with student needs and experiences in mind. \nIn this webinar\, you’ll learn the seven principles of good assessment and feedback. Based on a sound body of evidence of good pedagogic practice from across the UK and internationally\, these principles can be applied to all aspects of learning design and teaching in all sectors of education. They offer an actionable way to improve learning\, teaching and assessment\, underpinned by the effective application of technology. \n  \nKey Takeaways \n  \nYou’ll come away from this engaging and interactive webinar with an understanding of how to: \n\nHelp learners understand what they are aiming for by engaging them with the requirements and performance criteria for each task\nSupport learners’ personalized needs by being accessible\, inclusive and compassionate\nFoster active learning by recognizing that engagement with learning resources\, tutors and peers offer opportunities for formative development\nDevelop autonomous learners by encouraging self-generated feedback\, self-regulation\, reflection\, dialogue and peer review\nManage workloads effectively by having the right assessment\, at the right time\, supported by efficient business processes\nFoster a motivated learning community by involving students in decision making and supporting staff in developing their own practices\nPromote learner employability by assessing authentic tasks and encouraging ethical conduct\n\n

SUMMARY:CETL/WSC: Starting and Navigating Difficult Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Do you find it challenging to start conversations that are important to you? Or maybe you end up in a heated discussion about something you’re passionate about and it ends with no real resolution in sight? Join us for this session that can help in both professional and personal settings. \nBy the end of this session\, attendees will be better able to: \n\nPrepare themselves to have difficult conversations\nDetermine when a conversation is no longer “safe” and how to bring it back to “safety”\nUse emotional intelligence (EQ) techniques for a more effective conversation\nIdentify when it is appropriate to begin problem-solving and/or “next action” steps\n\n  \nWho should attend? WesternU employees at any level who engage or may engage in difficult one-on-one conversations or meetings. \nWe will be using the book “Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High” as the centerpiece of this session along with real-life examples to aid in understanding these concepts.

SUMMARY:Webinar | How to Improve and Promote Student Engagement in the Online Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Lectures rarely provide optimal learning environments that secure effective\, sustained learning outcomes. Online learning requires classrooms designed to engage learners and build a sense of ownership of their knowledge. \nAs we explore the future of learning in higher education post-pandemic\, what do we need to know about student engagement? How do we design our classes and the learning experience to balance what we need to teach with engaged learning? \nWe must ask ourselves: Are student engagement and activity-based learning possible in all subjects? What does the research tell us about student engagement? What are some of the cautions about student engagement we should be aware of? \nIn this interactive webinar\, Dr. Amy Sloan brings to the table her considerable experience in program and course design and a strong focus on non-traditional adult learners. \nKey Takeaways \nIn this webinar\, participants explore: \n\nWhy student engagement is a critical variable in student success and what this means for course design and delivery\nExamples of effective student engagement\nThe five Cs of student engagement: connection\, consistency\, content\, community\, and compassion\nThe pitfalls of designs for engagement and the importance of tying active learning to learning outcomes\n\nSpeaker:  Amy Sloan\, Ed.D. | Lecturer\, Department of Curriculum & Instruction at Baylor University

SUMMARY:Webinar | How is the Pandemic Affecting the Future of OER?
DESCRIPTION:Multiple surveys of students\, faculty\, and administrators have all shown that the pandemic is producing fundamental changes in teaching and learning across all higher education. All groups report more optimistic views of online and hybrid learning\, as well as a greater desire for technology integration in all courses. Resistance to the use of digital materials is disappearing\, with students and faculty both expressing a greater desire to replace print materials with digital. \nMany of these changes bode well for the future growth of OER adoption. However\, other trends\, such as the time required for faculty to mold their courses into new formats have prevented them from spending the time required to find and adopt new materials. Likewise\, commercial publishers have embraced many of these changes and now represent a very different alternative than they were prior to the pandemic. Which of these competing pressures will prevail? \nAttendees will gain a much fuller understanding of OER\, allowing them to better understand if OER is an appropriate option for their institution and/or teaching. \nSpeakers: Jeff Seaman\, Ph.D. | Director – Bay View Analytics \n                 Julia Seaman\, Ph.D. | Director of Research – Bay View Analytics \n                 Daniel Williamson  | Managing Director – OpenStax

SUMMARY:Magic links™: Locating and using permanent links
DESCRIPTION:You don’t have to be a graduate of Ilvermorny or Hogwarts to use this magic. In this workshop\, attendees will be shown which library resources have permalinks or persistent links\, called “magic links” by some faculty. They will also be shown how to copy these links or use a special generator to “fix” the URLs. SUMMARY:Webinar | Online Copyright Education Center Update and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Over the past year\, Columbia University Libraries Copyright Advisory Services\, the Copyright Office at the University of Michigan Library\, and an advisory group of world-class experts piloted a new online copyright education center with classes on copyright issues and management. Our vision is to inform and empower our community\, recognizing that copyright and related issues are foundational to our networked\, digital world and emphasizing equitable access to reliable\, relevant\, understandable information. Across museums\, libraries\, archives\, research\, scholarship\, and education there is a convergence of copyright issues\, their impact on day-to-day and strategic decisions\, and the distinct ways in which copyright turns up across these sectors. The aim of the initiative is to address these points of convergence. This session will discuss the lessons learned from the pilot\, next steps\, and what will be offered for late spring 2022 and beyond. Join us for an update on our pilot and our work toward a sustainable service model. We invite conversation and feedback. \nOutcomes\n\nGain insights into the current state of copyright literacy\nReceive information about how to access these trustworthy new educational resources to become empowered\nShare feedback that can help shape the future work of the initiative so as to gain maximum benefit\n\n  \nPresenters:  Melissa Levine\, Director\, Copyright Office\, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor   &    Rina Pantalony \n

The book “Neuroteach: Brain Science and the Future of Education” describes this new evidence-informed genre. The book also discusses effective and not-so-effective teaching methods that leverage the body of knowledge regarding brain anatomy and physiology. Of particular interest to most educators is “The Top Twelve Research-Informed Strategies Every Teacher Should Be Doing with Every Student”. During this presentation\, we will recap the major points discussed in the book and review the Top 12 list. Come hear and discuss what the current research on teaching & learning and the brain tells us should be best practice in the classroom.
