SUMMARY:Ask an ID
DESCRIPTION:This hour is reserved for YOU and your questions. Any topics related to teaching and learning and/or teaching with technology\, we’re here to support and assist you. \n  \nDuring this session\, the Instructional Design Team will host informal Office Hours. The Zoom session will have 3 breakout rooms\, and you can come and go throughout the rooms at your leisure. This month’s Breakout Rooms include: \n  \n\nRoom 1: Elentra Q&A\nRoom 2: Course Design and Activity Planning Q&A\nRoom 3: Articulate 360 Software Q&A\n\n  \nWhat Do Instructional Designers Do? … Instructional designers specialize in the process of learning. An instructional designer has a unique skill set that blends technology and pedagogy\, which is ideal for supporting learning activities. Our ID’s can help maximize the technology within your online course to help enhance student learning\, as well as assist with redesigning courses\, developing entire courses\, or creating training materials\, such as teaching manuals and student guides. \n  \nLet’s talk “teaching and learning.” \nLet’s talk “teaching with tech.” \nLet’s talk “pedagogy.” \nLet’s talk about how we can help you. \n

SUMMARY:Magic links™: Locating and using permanent links
DESCRIPTION:You don’t have to be a graduate of Ilvermorny or Hogwarts to use this magic. In this workshop\, attendees will be shown which library resources have permalinks or persistent links\, called “magic links” by some faculty. They will also be shown how to copy these links or use a special generator to “fix” the URLs. These links can then be copied and pasted into bibliographies\, course syllabi\, and other documents making it easier to share library books and articles with students and faculty.

SUMMARY:Webinar | Online Copyright Education Center Update and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Over the past year\, Columbia University Libraries Copyright Advisory Services\, the Copyright Office at the University of Michigan Library\, and an advisory group of world-class experts piloted a new online copyright education center with classes on copyright issues and management. Our vision is to inform and empower our community\, recognizing that copyright and related issues are foundational to our networked\, digital world and emphasizing equitable access to reliable\, relevant\, understandable information. Across museums\, libraries\, archives\, research\, scholarship\, and education there is a convergence of copyright issues\, their impact on day-to-day and strategic decisions\, and the distinct ways in which copyright turns up across these sectors. The aim of the initiative is to address these points of convergence. This session will discuss the lessons learned from the pilot\, next steps\, and what will be offered for late spring 2022 and beyond. Join us for an update on our pilot and our work toward a sustainable service model. We invite conversation and feedback. \nOutcomes\n\nGain insights into the current state of copyright literacy\nReceive information about how to access these trustworthy new educational resources to become empowered\nShare feedback that can help shape the future work of the initiative so as to gain maximum benefit\n\n  \nPresenters:  Melissa Levine\, Director\, Copyright Office\, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor   &    Rina Pantalony \n

SUMMARY:Webinar - The Spark of Online Learning: How Technology and Emotion Science Invigorates Every Class (Contact North)
DESCRIPTION:Emotion and cognition are inextricably linked – how we feel and connect with others impacts both what we learn and how we retain that learning. When we engage in online learning we are not just presenting information and knowledge or teaching a skill\, we are engaged with emotional\, compassionate\, complex people. We can find ways to connect with them emotionally and personally so that we can unleash the opportunity to learn. \nThat’s the big idea here\, but it has very practical implications. These include: \n\nHow technology can be used to create an emotional connection to students.\nHow we can develop caring and supportive relationships with our students and how they can build a community of inquiry that is mutually supportive.\nHow emotions enable learning and what we can do as teachers to unleash positive emotions – hope\, optimism\, resilience\, efficacy.\n\nIn this engaging and interactive webinar\, Flower Darby will explore her developing understanding of the joy of teaching and the power of technology to enable truly engaging learning. \nKey Takeaways: \n\nUnderstanding why connecting with students at an emotional level matters for effective learning.\nIdentifying how emotions and cognition interrelate.\nExploring practical strategies to put the power of emotions to work in your classes.\nLearning how to create conditions in which you\, as a teacher\, find the joy in teaching\n\nFacilitator:  Flower Darby – Author

SUMMARY:Artificial Intelligence: Expanding the impact and access of healthcare worldwide
DESCRIPTION:Since 1957 the idea of artificial intelligence (AI) has moved from myth to reality\, and as we progress into the future\, AI will increase its stronghold in our society. While the advances of this technology are exciting to some\, others are fearful. A recent study found that nearly 69% of college graduates believe AI could take their jobs in a few years\, and with the CheXNet deep learning software being able to read a chest Xray with a higher accuracy than a medically trained professional\, the fear may be validated. \n  \nIn this session we will begin to pull back the curtain on AI. We’ll discuss the history of AI\, and the three main types of artificial intelligence while focusing in on how AI is specifically used in medicine. We will also share insight on an AI application that has some radiologists worried for their job security\, and discuss how some of these fears are unfounded.

SUMMARY:Webinar - How to Design a Micro-Credential that Meets Demand (Contact North/Nord)
DESCRIPTION:Canada has about 10\,000 micro-credentials. But many do not meet the definition of what they are intended to be: short\, focused\, intensive learning linked to skills that are in demand from employers\, industry or a profession. The situation is similar in the U.S. and Europe. The important question is how to design and develop micro-credentials that help more people find jobs\, change jobs or develop the skills they need to keep the jobs they already have. What needs to change in the current approach to this fast-changing form of learning? What can Canadian educators learn from developments elsewhere in the world? \nKey Takeaways \nBy participating in this webinar\, you will: \n\nUnderstand the current state of micro-credentials in Canada and the U.S. including those offered by MOOC providers (Coursera\, edX and FutureLearn) and industry.\nRecognize the five major limitations of the current offerings\nExamine an assessment-driven approach to skills and competency development linked to gap-based microlearning.\nAssess five major design changes needed to make micro-credentials work for students\, employers and communities.\nExplore the future of micro-credentials and long-form credentials: Are they gamechangers or “old wine in new bottles?\n\nFacilitator:   Stephen Murgatroyd | Chief Innovation Officer\, Contact North| Contact Nord

SUMMARY:Facilitator Development Series
DESCRIPTION:As competency-based education expands across the health professions the methods we use in the classroom also expand in order to promote active learning both inside and outside of the classroom. While we develop new learner skills through a competency-based approach we must also develop new faculty skills to meet the expanding needs for our students to attain competence. Both small group and large classroom teaching must adapt and expand how we teach and how we engage with learners.\n\nIn this 8-week faculty development series we will explore various teaching techniques and facilitator skills that can be used in the classrooms\, laboratories\, simulations\, and in clinical practice sites. The series will progress through 8 sessions. Each session will last 1 hour and is broken down into a theory burst about a specific teaching technique or facilitator skill\, followed by a practice period. The session will end with a debrief along with making specific plans to use the technique/skill with learners. Sessions will occur every other Friday over the course of a semester. While there is a progression in the skills focused upon faculty are welcome to sign up and participate in any of the sessions. The series will run the length of the Spring semester\nThe Second session is scheduled for Friday\, January 21\, 2022 from 3-4 PM via Zoom. Subsequent sessions are scheduled for the same time every other Friday. Faculty across both campuses and clinical sites are welcome to attend.
