SUMMARY:Developing Virtual Standardized Patients for Health Sciences Education using Natural Language Dialogue Systems
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will summarize our work on creating conversational virtual standardized patients for medical education. Our Virtual Standardized Patients are avatar representations of human patients which are controlled by artificial intelligence software. Students can converse using natural language\, practice their history taking skills and receive immediate feedback on their interaction. Students can interview the Virtual Patients via a web site\, on their iPads\, or using a Virtual Reality headset in which the students are virtually in the room with their patients to enhance the authenticity and realism of the experience. We have Virtual Standardized Patients with a variety of chief complaints including back pain\, abdominal pain\, headache\, dizziness\, shortness of breath\, dysuria\, and sadness. We are currently working on a patient with Opioid Use Disorder\, a patient with Limited English Proficiency\, and a Virtual Cancer Patient for health care providers to practice difficult conversations. \nDouglas Danforth is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He has been involved in Virtual Patient and Virtual Reality research for over 15 years. His lab is funded by the Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration\, The Ohio Department of Medicaid\, The Institute for Innovative Technologies in Medial Education\, The Agency for Health Care Research and Quality\, and The National Science Foundation.

SUMMARY:Webinar - Don’t Ignore the D.E.A.: Design\, Equity\, and Access in Online Education | Quality Matters
DESCRIPTION:The “digital divide” was a term coined in 2012 to describe the disparity amongst those students who did have internet access and those who did not (Van Dijk\, 2012). Research indicates teacher preparation and quality of teaching is the leading factor in student success. Poor preparation and inadequate quality of design strategies can deprive students of equitable use and access to optimal digital-based learning experiences (Delgado\, 2019). In this session\, we will discuss how through the incorporation of intentional design strategies\, strategies that promote equity and access\, we can create more inclusive learning experiences for our students. \n  \nPresented by Stephanie Delgado\, Senior Instructional Designer\, Florida International University

SUMMARY:Webinar: Partnerships in Instruction: Deepening Collaboration Among Instructional Support Staff\, Faculty and Students | Educause
DESCRIPTION:Teaching and learning is of critical importance to academic libraries as they seek to align themselves with the mission of their universities. To effectively support faculty in their teaching\, librarians and other instructional support staff need techniques and tools to foster collaboration. The demand for online instructional support during the pandemic affirmed the necessary role of libraries in assisting students and faculty. Join us to discuss how librarians might join forces with instructional support staff such as learning designers\, instructional technologists\, professional developers for centers of teaching and learning to enhance collaborative work with faculty and students. Questions we will explore together include: \n\nWhat are your challenges in supporting courses?\nHow can we enhance our collaboration to better support courses?\nWhat processes and relationships do we need for collaborative instructional support?\nWhat kind of professional development and/or workplace learning among staff and faculty might support these efforts?\n\nThe main audience for this QuickTalk is instructional librarians\, instructional technologists\, learning designers\, professional development staff (in centers of teaching and learning)\, and other instructional support staff who would like to collaborate to improve teaching and learning. \nFacilitated by:  John McCormick\, Associate Director of Learning Design | Brandeis University\, Waltham Massachusetts   \n                           Kathe Pelletier\, Director\, Teaching and Learning Program | Educause\, Washington\, District of Columbia \n

SUMMARY:Facilitator Development Series
DESCRIPTION:As competency-based education expands across the health professions the methods we use in the classroom also expand in order to promote active learning both inside and outside of the classroom. While we develop new learner skills through a competency-based approach we must also develop new faculty skills to meet the expanding needs for our students to attain competence. Both small group and large classroom teaching must adapt and expand how we teach and how we engage with learners. \n  \nIn this 8-week faculty development series\, we will explore various teaching techniques and facilitator skills that can be used in the classrooms\, laboratories\, simulations\, and in clinical practice sites. The series will progress through 8 sessions. Each session will last 1 hour and is broken down into a theory burst about a specific teaching technique or facilitator skill\, followed by a practice period. The session will end with a debrief along with making specific plans to use the technique/skill with learners. Sessions will occur every other Friday over the course of a semester. While there is a progression in the skills focused upon faculty are welcome to sign up and participate in any of the sessions. The series will run the length of the Fall semester and will be repeated again in the Spring semester. \n  \nThe first session is scheduled for Friday\, August 13\, from 3-4 PM via Zoom. Subsequent sessions are scheduled for the same time every other Friday. Faculty across both campuses and clinical sites are welcome to attend.

SUMMARY:Getting Started with Quality Matters
DESCRIPTION:Quality Matters began with a small group of Maryland colleagues who were trying to solve a common problem among institutions: how do we measure and guarantee the quality of a course? This question became important because many institutions were trying to create a system where they could share available seats in their online courses with other institutions. Because of this\, they worked to create courses of quality for their students\, regardless of where the course originated. In 2003\, the colleagues created the Quality Matters program\, which would create a scalable process for course quality assurance.  \nIn this session\, participants will be introduced to Quality Matters and how it can be helpful in effective course development. Participants will also look at some of the rubrics that are central to Quality Matters implementation.   \n  \n  \nSession Objectives:  \n\nProvide background and overview of Quality Matters  \nReview Quality Matters rubrics for higher education \nDescribe the benefits of using Quality Matters for course quality and development \n\n

SUMMARY:Connecting Educational Concepts with Mind Mapping Techniques
DESCRIPTION:Mind mapping is a technique used to visually outline information. By using words\, pictures and diagrams\, mind mapping can help professors teach connections in course material\, as well as help students study. \n  \nThe main concept\, or idea\, is at the center of the mind map. From the nucleus-center\, themes associated with the main concept branch out; and from each of these themes\, additional branches or twigs begin to grow as attributing information begins to unveil itself as a subset of the theme or idea. Mind mapping technique can help students visualize subject content and conceptually display how various ideas are interconnected. \n  \nIn this CETL Session we will: \n– explain the basic theory of mind mapping \n– identify how larger concepts can be broken down into smaller themes and ideas \n– list various educational technology tools to assist in the creation of a mind map \n– identify example mind maps used in medical education \n– apply new knowledge by creating a mind map \n

SUMMARY:The Prosthetic 3D Printing Revolution
DESCRIPTION:The e-NABLE Community is an amazing group of individuals from all over the world who come together and collaborate on ways to help improve the open-source 3D printable designs for hands and arms for those who were born missing fingers or who have lost them due to war\, disease or natural disaster. As of November 2019\, there have been approximately 7\,000 3D printed hands and arms created and gifted to children and adults in need in over 100 countries around the world. There are an estimated 30\,000 e-NABLE Volunteers (including students and teachers) who are helping to make a difference in their local communities\, clinics\, and schools all across the globe. \n  \nIn this session we will review the history of the e-NABLE Community\, and how some scrap metal and a 5-year old South African boy named Liam\, born with missing fingers due to Amniotic Band Syndrome\, made a difference to change the world for the better. We will focus on the required elements and techniques needed to begin the creation of 3D prosthetic printing. This includes scanning and measuring techniques\, adding style and colors\, and designing based on existing abilities when considering the difficulty in print and assembly of designs. We will also discuss bionics (robotic hands)\, specialty adaptors (bike handlebar\, guitar pick)\, and animal prosthetics. \n  \nIndividuals who might be interested in joining the Prosthetic 3D Printing Revolution are encouraged to attend\, as we hope to continue the conversation and create a WesternU team to help “e-NABLE the future” and expand upon this generous community.
