SUMMARY:Facilitator Development Series
DESCRIPTION:As competency-based education expands across the health professions the methods we use in the classroom also expand in order to promote active learning both inside and outside of the classroom. While we develop new learner skills through a competency-based approach we must also develop new faculty skills to meet the expanding needs for our students to attain competence. Both small group and large classroom teaching must adapt and expand how we teach and how we engage with learners. \n  \nIn this 8-week faculty development series\, we will explore various teaching techniques and facilitator skills that can be used in the classrooms\, laboratories\, simulations\, and in clinical practice sites. The series will progress through 8 sessions. Each session will last 1 hour and is broken down into a theory burst about a specific teaching technique or facilitator skill\, followed by a practice period. The session will end with a debrief along with making specific plans to use the technique/skill with learners. Sessions will occur every other Friday over the course of a semester. While there is a progression in the skills focused upon faculty are welcome to sign up and participate in any of the sessions. The series will run the length of the Fall semester and will be repeated again in the Spring semester. \n  \nThe first session is scheduled for Friday\, August 13\, from 3-4 PM via Zoom. Subsequent sessions are scheduled for the same time every other Friday. Faculty across both campuses and clinical sites are welcome to attend.

SUMMARY:Webinar - How to Effectively Use Assessment in Online And Blended Learning to Help Your Students Succeed
DESCRIPTION:There are new opportunities to rethink and reimagine how assessment for learning and assessments of learning takes place in an online and blended learning environment. Assessment is the key to retention and completion\, and effective feedback critical to student success. \nDuring this interactive webinar\, five principles for assessment are explored: \n\nAuthentic Assessment – enabling the student to capture and share what they learned\, including project-based work\, video\, audio\, presentation\, and group work.\nAccessible Assessment – free of gender and cultural bias\, inclusive and available to all student no matter what kind of technology they have access to.\nAutomated Assessment – leveraging technology to give high quality feedback quickly and effectively.\nContinuous Assessment – learning is a continuous process and assessment should “walk alongside” while the students learn.\nSecure Assessment – ensuring academic integrity is present in all forms of assessment.\n\nKey Takeaways \n\nUnderstanding what authentic and accessible assessment looks like and how it can be done.\nHow to leverage technology to automate some of the burden of continuous assessment.\nHow to create continuous assessment and feedback in an online and blended course.\nHow to ensure integrity of assessment.\nHow to manage student expectations.\n\n  \nPresented by: Dr. Stephen Murgatroyd\nChief Innovation Officer\, Contact North | Contact Nord

SUMMARY:Searching for Normal
DESCRIPTION:So much has changed in Higher Education since the start of the pandemic. What conveniences have you enjoyed? What have been some of the challenges? Will we reevaluate what’s important to us? Will the progress we’ve made during this time be undone? \nWhat is “normal”?  Is “normal” even normal anymore? \nBased on the article\, Let’s Not Return to Normal When the ‘New Normal’ Finally Arrives\, by Morton O. Schapiro\, this session will center around a robust discussion of “normal” in higher education and our lives in academia. Additional thoughts and insights from the Steven Mintz article Let’s Not Return to the Old Normal will be incorporated\, and insights from Sophia Rosenbaum’s article Dear Normal: Were you really that great in the first place? will be integrated. Come prepared to share\, discuss\, and question.

SUMMARY:Webinar - How to Use the HyFlex Method to Teach Online and In Person at the Same Time
DESCRIPTION:Faculty and instructors are facing instructional challenges never faced before from having to rapidly move their courses online. They have learned a lot\, but have a sense “they can do more!”. Faculty and instructors are also starting to realize not all of their students will be in class or online next year – there will be more “hybrid” teaching which requires a new\, flexible approach. \nFour takeaways from this webinar: \n• Learn how to use this flexible course framework that offers a combination of online\, synchronous\, and face-to-face options (hybrid) in a course where students are able to choose when and how they attend (flexible).\n• Develop successful strategies to engage online and in class students in a single class session.\n• Understand how HyFlex options prepare an institution (or program) for any other situation requiring an immediate shift to fully online.\n• Learn how assessments for and of learning can work when students are studying the same course in class and online.

SUMMARY:Facilitator Series
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is part of our OLC Innovate 2021 Best-in-Track (Leadership and Advocacy) summer webinar series! \nFor some instructors\, the pandemic events of 2020 and 2021 brought new challenges to teaching and learning\, alongside an imbalance in routines\, priorities\, and self-care habits. Many Instructors found themselves buried under grading and content creation\, all while managing multiple other personal and professional priorities. As we embark on a new school year\, join us for an engaging and collaborative group conversation to identify strategies for managing stress\, identifying outlets for self-care\, and reflecting on the nuggets of strength\, grace\, and hope that helped us persist through the worst of the pandemic. \nIn this honest\, personal\, informative\, and engaged conversation session\, participants will explore their self-care routines and strategies (or lack thereof) and how they might find new ways to build self-care practices and strategies into their daily practices moving forward. Let’s work together to create individualized plans to weather whatever challenges the new school year brings. \nBy participating in this webinar\, you will… \n\nIdentify at least one strategy you use to infuse self-care into your daily routine.\nIdentify at least one person you will actively build a network with and together further support and mentor one another to address burnout\, fatigue\, and self-care.\nDiscuss strategies for rewriting one’s fatigue\, burnout\, and stress dialogue.\nIdentify possible teaching-focused strategies that could reduce stress\, fatigue\, and burnout.\n\nPlease note: This webinar will NOT be recorded in order to encourage and protect candid sharing from participants in a safe space.
