SUMMARY:InteresTED - The Brain - part two
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for some lunch and some fascinating discussion about the brain\, its myths\, its potential and its mysteries\, as we watch two engaging TED talks about this most fascinating organ.  Facilitated by: Tim Wood\n\nWhat Happens in Your Brain When You Pay Attention? ? Mehdi Ordikhani-Seyedlar\nAttention isn’t just about what we focus on — it’s also about what our brains filter out. By investigating patterns in the brain as people try to focus\, computational neuroscientist Mehdi Ordikhani-Seyedlar hopes to build computer models that can be used to treat ADHD and help those who have lost the ability to communicate. Hear more about this exciting science in this brief\, fascinating talk.\n\nA Map of the Brain ? Allan Jones\nHow can we begin to understand the way the brain works? The same way we begin to understand a city: by making a map. In this visually stunning talk\, Allan Jones shows how his team is mapping which genes are turned on in each tiny region\, and how it all connects up.

SUMMARY:InteresTED - The Brain - part one
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for some lunch and some fascinating discussion about the brain\, its myths\, its potential and its mysteries\, as we watch two engaging TED talks about this most fascinating organ.  Facilitated by: Tim Wood\n\nWhat We?ll Learn About The Brain in the Next Century Sam Rodriques\nIn this imaginative talk\, neuroengineer Sam Rodriques takes us on a thrilling tour of the next 100 years in neuroscience. He envisions strange (and sometimes frightening) innovations that may be the key to understanding and treating brain disease — like lasers that drill tiny holes in our skulls and allow probes to study the electrical activity of our neurons.\n\nWhat Percentage of Your Brain Do You Use?  Richard E. Cytowic\nTwo thirds of the population believes a myth that has been propagated for over a century: that we use only 10% of our brains. Hardly! Our neuron-dense brains have evolved to use the least amount of energy while carrying the most information possible — a feat that requires the entire brain. Richard E. Cytowic debunks this neurological myth (and explains why we aren’t so good at multitasking).

SUMMARY:Designing better learning experiences using Gamification elements
DESCRIPTION:Gamification is the concept of applying game-design elements (e.g. point scoring\, competition\, rewards) to drive game-like behavior in non-game settings to make them more fun and engaging. Already video games aimed at teaching medical education are making their ways into schools. These games do not replace lectures; instead they reinforce the curriculum in a way that is both interactive and entertaining. \n \nIn a recent report\, medical students report significantly higher rates of burnout when compared to age-matched fellow college graduates. Too often medical students lose their motivation because of emotional exhaustion\, depersonalization and a diminished sense of personal accomplishment. Medical students should no longer see their education as a challenge to overcome. They should see it as a game that can be won.\n\n\nby Abigail Cline at Medical College of Georgia\n\n \nIn this training you will learn about:\n \nWhat is Gamification and the “Flow” theory?\n \nWhat are the gaming elements that make games so engaging? \n \nHow to design better learning experiences using gaming elements to drive students engagement?

SUMMARY:InteresTED: The Secret of Becoming Mentally Strong
DESCRIPTION:Everyone has the ability to build mental strength\, but most people don’t know how. No matter what your goals are\, building mental strength is the key to reaching your greatest potential. \nIn this session we will watch Amy Morin’s TEDx Talk\, and dive deeper into the presented concepts of: \n\n3 Types of Self-Limiting Beliefs That Will Keep You Stuck in Life.\n13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do.

SUMMARY:PBL Gamechanger: Converting Paper Cases to Online e-Learning Modules
DESCRIPTION:This session will introduce you to a PBL game-changing format utilizing Articulate Storyline. Standard written medical cases studies were transitioned into e-modules allowing for better assessment of the student’s critical thinking and decision-making skills through case selection interactions. \nThe idea was to take the traditional case-based learning method and convert the model into a case scenario to be presented in an online environment\, incentivizing correct answers and disincentivizing incorrect answers. This gamification pedagogy helps students to understand that in real-world scenarios not all diagnostics are necessary or appropriate and therefore their choices should be well thought out and intentional. The e-modules challenges learners to engage in decision-making that mirrors the clinical setting. The ending goal of the CBL e-module is to provide appropriate and cost-effective healthcare to the patient. \nIn this session\, the presenters will discuss the e-module case study development process from planning to implementation.  During the session the audience will gain access to the e-module and experience the case via their tablet\, mobile device\, or wi-fi enabled laptop.  Group discussion about the Articulate Storyline implementation will commence and participants will get to see and learn about the structure of the e-module design.  Utilizing an online case development template\, the audience will work in small groups to begin to develop their own case during the session. \nUpon completion of this session audience members will be able to: \n\n-Describe how traditional medical case-based learning can be converted into an online e-learning module within a blended learning environment.\n-Identify how Articulate Storyline can be used to develop online e-modules for medical case-based learning.\n\n*NOTE: Please bring a laptop to fully participate in the session

SUMMARY:NYMJ Club - Various Ways of Understanding the Concept of Andragogy
DESCRIPTION:This article deals with the concept of andragogy and the understanding of the same from a historical and professional perspective. It also includes a clarification of the difference between European and North American andragogy. Andragogy concerns adult education and learning in some way or another\, but\, beyond this\, the concept is ambiguous. Many perceive it as being synonymous with Knowles’s andragogy from the 1970s\, but this perspective is divorced from a sense of history. European andragogy arose long before Knowles’s andragogy did and is also more ambiguous. This article accounts for various understandings of andragogy\, from the first known user of the concept to date. \nPlease review the article and be prepared to discuss during session: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/2331186X.2018.1496643

SUMMARY:InteresTED: The Psychology of Self-Motivation
DESCRIPTION:“Virginia Tech professor of psychology Scott Geller discusses the logic behind boundaries — and how to break them — in his informative talk. By breaking down the reasons and thought processes behind our ability to self-motivate\, Geller allows us to figure out what works and what doesn’t. \nHe implores the audience to keep in mind aspects of choice\, consequences\, and community when making decisions. Knowing that we’re all in this together is sometimes enough to get us going\, and Geller\, through his comprehensive talk\, reassures us of that fact.” (Economy\, 2015)
