SUMMARY:Innovating Anatomy with 3D Printing Technologies & Lab Tour
DESCRIPTION:3D Medical Printing continues to be one of the top trends in medical education.  Here at WesternU we have the equipment and the opportunity to be at the cutting-edge of this trend.  With the help of the EdTech Team\, faculty can develop 3D models and prototypes for use in their courses. \nPublished research outlines how 3D printed models can provide an appropriate supplement to cadaveric materials and may even have certain benefits over the organic materials.  Furthermore\, a 2019 study suggests that 3D printing has the potential to significantly improve research knowledge and the skills of new practitioners. \nDuring this session we will share examples of how 3D printing is currently utilized in medical education.  Attendees will get to tour the 3D Printing Lab and learn about the technology and materials available here at WesternU. Lastly\, attendees will use their new knowledge and inspiration to begin brainstorming on how to merge their current practices with 3D technologies for further development and learning opportunities in the classroom. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDefine how 3D printing is currently used in medical education\nIdentify the available printing technologies and materials available at the 3D Printing Lab\nBegin to prepare a plan to develop 3D models and use those assets in the curriculum

SUMMARY:Webinar - Fostering the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning through Faculty Learning Communities
DESCRIPTION:Learn how you can grow faculty research through your existing faculty learning communities.\nIf your institution has faculty learning communities (FLCs)\, you’re already creating teaching projects that introduce innovations in the classroom\, such as experiential learning components or online components. However\, have you ever considered moving these projects beyond your institutional boundaries — to peer-reviewed presentations or publications on teaching and learning? \nJoin us online to learn from a leader in the field how Miami University has used their faculty learning communities to grow the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). If you’re an institution with FLCs looking for easier ways to grow research\, we’ll offer advice on how to grow your faculty into SoTL presenters in just one year.

SUMMARY:Online Instruction: How Can Media Richness Theory and Social Presence Theory Help Me Improve?
DESCRIPTION:Attrition rates are 10% to 20% higher in online courses than their face-to-face counterparts. While online course formats offer convenient methods of instruction\, poor course development often leads to high attrition rates. This facilitated discussion explores how applying Media Richness Theory (MRT) and Social Presence Theory to online course design and instruction can aid overall program retention and student satisfaction.

SUMMARY:Webinar - Before Your Course: Instructional Strategies for Implementing VR
DESCRIPTION:How can you go beyond virtual field trips and use VR to promote active student learning?  \nVirtual reality in higher education is often implemented as “low-hanging fruit.” While going on an exotic virtual field trip to a historic city might be thought-provoking\, it’s also a more passive type of learning.  \nBut as the availability of educational content is ramping up and equipment costs are trending down\, institutions can move towards more active applications of VR — such as\, students building a game around a concept.  \nJoin us online to break down instructional strategies for VR to help you achieve more meaningful learning outcomes for your students.

SUMMARY:How Do I Lead Change from the Middle?
DESCRIPTION:New technology\, regulatory upheaval\, changing student demographics\, longstanding faculty expectations\, shifting workforce demands\, and ever-changing university operations leave deans and department chairs adrift within a sea of undifferentiated information and competing demands. Major strategic choices come from university leadership leaving deans and chairs to focus on innovation management. Through insights developed in higher education and other industries\, this program helps participants focus on the key drivers most important to foster positive change and department cohesion while enabling the leadership to succeed with the limited authority afforded to deans and department chairs. \nLEARNING GOALS \nAfter this program\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify key drivers changing schools and colleges\nCraft a strategy for strategic improvement\nProvide concrete leadership strategies to manage primary challenges\nEmphasize techniques to enhance student learning outcomes\nIncrease buy-in for faculty\, staff\, and senior administration\n\nPresented By: Jon M. SUMMARY:Webinar - Key Considerations for VR Implementations for Student Learning
DESCRIPTION:Virtual reality (VR) has been around for decades. Like any emerging technology\, it has moved through a cycle. Early in the cycle\, people had unrealistic expectations about its potential\, and they became disappointed by its ability to solve everyday problems.  \nBut now virtual reality is gaining momentum. As of the Gartner Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies 2018 report\, the technology is rapidly reaching a much more mature stage – holding more promise for higher education and student learning than ever before.

SUMMARY:Webinar - Accessibility at All Times: Supporting Neurodiverse Learning Outside of the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Learn how East Carolina University supported their students’ neurodiversity through academic technologies and specialized tutoring.\nAs of now\, much of our curriculum in higher ed is initially designed as if learners are “neurosimilar\,” then retrofitted for those who don’t meet that mold. This leads to many students seeking additional support outside of the classroom in order to achieve academic success. \nContrary to some beliefs\, neurodiversity (or learner variability) applies to all students. Essentially\, neurodiversity is the idea that neurological and learning differences among people are the result of naturally occurring variations within the human genome. Rather than looking for a cure to “fix” neurodiverse behaviours\, neurodiversity focuses on accommodating and supporting the diverse population. Human brains all learn differently; therefore\, neurodiversity should be regarded as the rule\, not the exception. \nIn this webcast\, Dr. Elizabeth Coghill will describe how: \n\nECU’s Pirate Academic Success Center promotes the success of various learners by infusing the curriculum with universal design principles and academic technologies\nShe\, her staff\, and a network of peer tutors equip students to be independent learners
