SUMMARY:Webinar - Accessibility at All Times: Supporting Neurodiverse Learning Outside of the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Learn how East Carolina University supported their students’ neurodiversity through academic technologies and specialized tutoring.\nAs of now\, much of our curriculum in higher ed is initially designed as if learners are “neurosimilar\,” then retrofitted for those who don’t meet that mold. This leads to many students seeking additional support outside of the classroom in order to achieve academic success. \nContrary to some beliefs\, neurodiversity (or learner variability) applies to all students. Essentially\, neurodiversity is the idea that neurological and learning differences among people are the result of naturally occurring variations within the human genome. Rather than looking for a cure to “fix” neurodiverse behaviours\, neurodiversity focuses on accommodating and supporting the diverse population. Human brains all learn differently; therefore\, neurodiversity should be regarded as the rule\, not the exception. \nIn this webcast\, Dr. Elizabeth Coghill will describe how: \n\nECU’s Pirate Academic Success Center promotes the success of various learners by infusing the curriculum with universal design principles and academic technologies\nShe\, her staff\, and a network of peer tutors equip students to be independent learners

SUMMARY:Webinar - How To Tame High Cognitive Load In eLearning
DESCRIPTION:Did you ever experience “firehose training?” That’s when learners are flooded with content\, without regard for how they perceive\, process and retain it. Information overload is a significant hindrance to effective learning and retention. But\, can we do anything about it? Fortunately\, we can. Over the decades\, cognitive load theory has been researched and refined. We now know there are ways to reduce high cognitive load. \nPlease join UCI Division of Continuing Education in welcoming Connie Malamed (a.k.a. The eLearning Coach) to explore a model of how we learn\, what high cognitive load really means\, and instructional strategies you can use to reduce high cognitive load.

SUMMARY:Webinar - Getting Research Ideas With the Aim of Publication
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in the first of a series in free webinars sponsored by the Team-Based Learning Collaborative\, focusing on generating research ideas with an aim at getting that scholarly work published. Many who are teaching-focused would like to (or need to) publish papers\, but may not have access to research data in a particular discipline. This TBLC Research and Scholarship webinar is the first in a series that features a wide range of research that members have published. \nThis inaugural webinar deals with what is possibly the hardest step in the research process\, which is to find a workable research idea that draws on our classroom activities. This poses a challenge\, because for most of us teaching/education is an unfamiliar discipline\, and it may be hard to see how we can draw on our own “technical” discipline research experience for guidance. \nDr. Balan’s field of expertise is entrepreneurship and innovation\, but he has built a research stream in education/pedagogy and has set up collaborative research projects with TBLC members in different countries. His view is that every time we walk into a classroom we should see the students in front of us as a potential dataset and that there are many possible research ideas that emerge out of our teaching\, and out of reflecting on student attitudes and perceptions in general. \nDr. Balan will talk through a practical approach for generating research ideas\, and will use some of his current projects to bring to life the first steps in the research process\, which is to identify a research idea and then to turn this into a research question that can be explored using data provided by your students. \nPresenter:\nDr. Peter Balan\, OAM |  University of South Australia Business School

SUMMARY:Webinar - Moving Beyond Data Collection to Meaningful Quality Assurance and Curriculum Improvement: The Future of Curriculum Mapping
DESCRIPTION:Curriculum mapping is often required at institutions for quality assurance and curriculum improvement. However\, many institutions are stuck at data collection and haven’t been able to aggregate the data from a course level up to a program level\, or even better\, include data from other divisions of the institution. The desired outcome is to make changes to the curriculum that will improve the program and create pathways for learning from year 1-4. Yet\, by the time mapping is completed people often experience what Wolf calls curriculum fatigue and interpretation and action is not actually taken. Further\, job cycles are inconsistent with program review cycles. Department chairs might transition. Data might be hard to access. Documents get lost. Strategic Plans get forgotten or abandoned. Wolf proposes a curriculum dashboard\, intended to bring institutional data together and keep it accessible to anyone in the job. \nIt is common for those responsible for curriculum mapping to experience frustration with a possibly mandatory policy to collect course data and apply it to course development. We’ll discuss how to move forward successfully without getting bogged down in the challenges. We’ll also explore the possibilities beyond course data\, how that can be done\, and what effect it will have program wide. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearning Goals \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEnvision a custom curriculum dashboard that encourages continuous improvement\nConsider course-based evidence and other institutional data that can be mapped\nConsider how to evolve a systems approach to mapping in their context\nUnderstand that internal advocacy is needed to make this a common goal

SUMMARY:Moving USMLE Step 1 After Core Clerkships: Rationale\, Challenges and Early Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:Schools undergoing curricular reform are re-evaluating the optimal timing of Step 1. Historically\, students have completed the exam immediately following the basic science curriculum. A small but growing number of schools have moved Step 1 after the core clinical clerkships\, citing a number of reasons for the change\, including promoting long-term retention and understanding of basic science concepts. \nAs schools undergo curricular transformation\, educators are looking to peer institutions to share their experience and lessons learned. They are also seeking data to guide decisions. In this webinar\, Dr. Daniel will review the reasons to consider a change\, the potential hurdles one might encounter\, and the findings of recent studies. This will serve as a springboard for dialogue surrounding the optimal timing of Step 1.
