SUMMARY:IAMSE Webinar - Going Lecture Free for Gen Z
DESCRIPTION:The Wright Curriculum\, a lecture free curriculum\, began in 2017 at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine\, with the goal of having students become self-directed learners using evidence-based teaching and learning activities. We have several aims with this curriculum. First\, help students develop skills in critical thinking. Second\, help students learn how to discover the best evidence to make decisions. Third\, give students the skills to keep learning throughout a life of service in the practice of medicine. \nSince Peer Instruction is being utilized in over 60% of our curricular time\, we will spend more time discussing Peer Instruction\, from the faculty perspective in developing session material and how to effectively facilitate sessions\, and from the student perspective in how learning gains are made in the sessions. \nAt the end of the session\, participants will be able to: \n\nExplain the evidence and rationale for using active learning strategies throughout medical school\, and how active learning strategies contribute to student attendance and team-work.\nFormulate effective approaches to implementing a lecture-free curriculum that is grounded in science\, specifically using the teaching modality of Peer Instruction (PI).\nIntroduce best-practice strategies\, tips\, and lessons learned from going lecture-free.”\n\n

SUMMARY:ELI Webinar | Sustainable Innovation + Faculty Choice + Student-Centered Design = NGDLE
DESCRIPTION:We all have faculty who decide to use new\, unsupported learning technologies. Despite the lack of IT support\, it may be the best choice for their particular course or pedagogy. \nAny given semester\, students might have four or more different courses where each faculty member has introduced different platforms or has implemented some of the same tools differently. IT staff\, while they embrace innovation\, are challenged by the work needed to support the existing and official solutions their organizations use\, and it becomes difficult to scale the evaluation and integration of new and emerging tools while ensuring data security\, FERPA compliance\, and accessibility. \nHear how teams at Penn State\, Duke\, and Indiana University are working on building their next generation digital learning environments. Fueled by open-source technology and standards\, they are embracing user desires by allowing pedagogy and personalization to inform and shape technology selection in sustainably implemented ecosystems. \nOutcomes\n\nUnderstand differing interpretations of NGDLE and the role campus academic and IT culture play in defining and realizing NGDLE\nUnderstand how NGDLE can enable choice at the university\, school\, and faculty levels while providing better user experiences for students\nExplore strategies for enabling sustainable innovation at scale

SUMMARY:Webinar – Managing Difficult Faculty
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to more effectively address negative behavior and performance problems of your faculty.  \nUsing case studies\, you will practice four steps for dealing with difficult faculty who exhibit unprofessional\, unproductive\, or even destructive behavior. Throughout this program\, we will examine the essential elements of success when managing difficult faculty:  \n\nEssential elements of success \nStep 1: Engage \nStep 2: Manage \nStep 3: Enforce \nStep 4: Marginalize \n\n What do we mean by difficult faculty\, and why does it matter?  \n Do any of these faculty members sound familiar to you: the “rarely ever seen\,” the “meeting disrupter\,” the  \n“Toxic personality\,” the “bully\,” the “non-collaborator\,” the “terrible teacher\,” the “hasn’t produced any  \nScholarship in decades\,” the “never volunteers for anything\,” or the “criticizes other faculty and Administration to the students?” These are just some of the many challenging faculty characteristics that supervisors\, directors\, chairs\, and deans must manage.  \n Difficult faculty are particularly challenging to manage as they are often tenured and don’t acknowledge the department chair as a true authority. Academic leadership must nonetheless address difficult faculty behaviors because they can undermine your department’s effectiveness in achieving its mission.  \n  \n Presented by:     Academic Impressions   \n
